The #PāHarakeke Collection – ‘Our Woven World’ is inspired by the journey of artist Arnya Karaitiana in celebrating identity, while achieving balance and overall well-being. In Māori culture, the Harakeke plant symbolizes family. The central shoot (Rito) represents a child, the adjacent leaves are the parents, and the outer leaves are the grandparents, illustrating unity and generational support. The smaller fibres within the leaves signify the family's strength and cohesion. This collection showcases seven intricate designs, ranging from the prominent Harakeke – The Flax to the subtle and delicate textures of Te Kākano – The Seed and Pakiaka – The Root. It represents various stages of evolution, featuring linear and directional patterns with diverse textures in designs such as Muka – The Fibre, Te Rau – The Leaf, Tuia – To Stitch, and Raranga – To Weave. Together, these elements depict the plant's development and create a visually captivating effect. “This collection brings to life the lines we live by and the lines that connect us. A woven universe intermittently communicating to each other consciously and unconsciously.” The Harakeke plant, with its strong, fanned, sword-like leaves, symbolises family in Māori culture. The central shoot (Rito) represents a child, adjacent leaves are the parents, and outer leaves are the grandparents. This structure illustrates family unity and generational support, with the smaller fibres within the leaves symbolising the family's strength and cohesion. The Pā Harakeke Collection – ‘Our Woven World’ draws inspiration from the artist Arnya Karaitiana's exploration of identity, balance, and holistic well-being. In this visual narrative, we delve into Arnya's sources of inspiration and creative process, providing insight into the significance of the Pā Harakeke collection. The Harakeke is an herbaceous plant with strong, sword-like leaves arranged in a fan-like pattern around the central growing point, called the ‘Rito’. In Māori culture, the Pā Harakeke (flax family) symbolises whānau (family), with the Rito representing a child, the adjacent leaves as parents, and the outer leaves as grandparents. The plant's structure illustrates interconnectedness and generational support, while the smaller muka fibres within the flax strands symbolise the unity and strength of the family. “This collection brings to life the lines we live by and the lines that connect us. A woven universe intermittently communicating to each other consciously and unconsciously.” Arnya Karaitiana (@arnyak) For more on this collection, visit the product catalog https://lnkd.in/gCPx5xfM Or download a brochure here https://lnkd.in/gfpJr4HJ #instadecor #interiordesigners #aotearoa #interiordecoration #indigenousart #moderninteriordesign #flatlayforever #exclusivecollection #interiordesigntips #interiorinspirations #communities #communitymatters #reconciliation #newcollection #collaborationart #artistcollaboration #collaborationwork #newcollaboration #aoteroaart #aotearoanz

Milliken Floors ANZ, in conjunction with The Designers Institute of New Zealand (DINZ), proudly introduces our latest 'To The Floor' collection, Pā Harakeke – ‘Our Woven World', crafted in collaboration with Creative Director & Kaiārahi Māori, Arnya Karaitiana. Arnya Karaitiana born in Hastings, Aotearoa, New Zealand is of Māori decent – Rangitāne, Ngāti Ranginui, Te Arawa. She shares her unique indigenous perspective from her Te Ao Māori view of the world, through an expression of connection, exploring the relationships between people and place – Our Woven World. Arnya brings profound expertise from over 15 years in the arts, design, and advertising sectors. Her passion lies in purposeful design, craftsmanship, and storytelling, all aimed at creating experiences that resonate deeply and foster positive change. “Knowing your identity is knowing your whānau (family), your whakapapa (heritage) while maintaining the connections between body, mind, and spirit.” She emphasises the sense of connection, strength, and resilience that arises from a strong whānau (family) foundation while honouring the many generations—past, present, and future—that shape her journey. With a young whānau of her own, Arnya pursues daily well-being by integrating creative practices and perspectives rooted in indigenous traditions, all while gently respecting the environment that sustains us.
