  • The welcoming, uplifting community environment that is, One Playground Surry Hills, provides a holistic experience for wellness through attentive consideration of biophilia, lighting, colour, sound and scent. The inherited architecture breaths the history of Surry Hills which began as a township of warehouses and workers cottages for the “rag trade” clothing industry. One Playground Surry Hills, much like an atelier which would have existed in this area to create clothing, is a studio where members go to create a better version of themselves towards better wellness. As you enter up the stairs, you are greeted by the juxtaposition of original brick paired with reflected, sculptural joinery, playing on the duality of energies and nodding to the industrial roots of the site. A predominantly cream palette keeps it fresh and unexpected within a gym environment, with a pop of green to echo biophilic surroundings. The industrial shell of exposed ceilings and steel framed glass partitions sits with refined leather wrapped details around the entry stair handrail and dressing structural columns and sleek minimal light fittings with bronze metal detailing. Original sawtooth ceilings are exaggerated, and mirror creates visually elongated spaces and repetition in design. Monolithic forms rise out of raw concrete floors as showers, benches and pools, partially clad in tactile accent finishes such as the Tiento – Zukuri Forest tile in the curvaceous open showers and seating bolsters covered in the sophisticated Summertime Foresta stripes by Dedar. Stone accents pop out through the space starting with the green marble refreshment station as you arrive and ending with the soft travertine platform in the reformer pilates studio. • It seems impossible that we are coming to the end of the year when it feels like we just welcomed in 2024! The room is spinning as despite January 1st feeling like yesterday, it has been an incredible twelve months during which we have worked with a global array of incredible people and opened, we can barely believe it, twelve venues. From five star luxury at The Lana in Dubai, to the stunning wellness phenomenon that is Sydney’s One Playground; Throw in a globally recognized DJ’s new Melbourne hub, Marmont, the iconic destinational dining of Maison Batard, Marmelo & Mr Mills, and a culinary banquet of cuisine from modern Chinese to Onigiri, and we can call it a year! Our offices are closing from Friday 20th December as we will be taking some time off to reset and refuel our creative energy. We will be back on Wednesday 8th January and cannot wait to share what we have in store for 2025! #designedbymitchellandeades #hospitalitydesign #lifestyleisthenewluxury

  • Unapologetically boujee, boozy, and decadent.    A future classic, Maison Batard is 8 years in the making and a lifetime of dreaming what’s possible. A design collaboration between Chris and Sarah Lucas, Mitchell & Eades, and Mills Gorman Architects.    Situated in the Heritage building of 23 Bourke Street, Melbourne’s finest and most talented artisans have worked tirelessly for almost 8 years to restore this iconic building.    “In the spirit of classic French styling, we have honoured the heritage, grandeur, and charm of the original building and imbued it with a modern edge and vivacity. This philosophy has informed every aspect of the design for Maison Batard, where texture, luxury, and comfort play pivotal roles. The result is Chris and Sarah’s four-level love letter to Melbourne that celebrates their affinity with French inspired style, dining, and celebration…we all know how much they like to throw a good party!” - Mitchell & Eades Design Team Here, seeing is believing.     “Melbourne is my home and I have dedicated the best part of my life to this city. A city that I love so much and have so many amazing memories of. My new Maison has taken years to come to life and has absorbed much of my creative energy and now the time is here for us to open the doors…I see this lifetime of work as my gift to Melbourne.” Chris Lucas.

  • Project update: With a vision to reimagine the design of a gym and provide everything under one roof, for one affordable membership, becoming One Playground represented a move beyond just fitness to become an all encompassing Playground for all things health and wellness. This luxury space is fitted with traditional and infrared saunas, revitalising cold plunges and mineral showers, in an environment that’s meticulously designed to optimise the recovery journey. From the travertine teacher’s stage and custom wall lights to the brass-framed mirrors and mirrored ceilings, Reformer at The Urban Oasis embodies understated elegance. Coming Spring of 2024. #designedbymitchellandeades

  • Once upon a time, short stay rentals such as Airbnb promised a sense of place in their stays — an opportunity that felt more intimate and local than the generic hotel offering. However, the expansion and takeover of both property and industry since the general conception in 2007 has, somewhere along the way, strayed far from this original objective: today, the likes of AirBnB has become synonymous with small, under-equipped spaces, obligations to carry out chores, painful check-in processes, and so on. Regardless, the origins of AirBnB have created and maintained a lust for something more: more than a hotel room adorned with white walls, white linen, and an all-inclusive breakfast buffet. So what can the hotels of today learn from the factors that drove AirBnB to success — and how can they engage travellers who no longer trust the platform? • If you're anything like us and love dessert, then this upcoming M&E project will be next on your list. "Both the restaurant and bar were designed by Melbourne interior architecture and design studio Mitchell & Eades (Onigiri, Beverly). Marmelo takes influences from Lisbon streets and will have decorative hand-painted tiles, brushed metal details and banquette seating." The love keeps coming in for Sunny Lusted and Ross Lusted, and their upcoming Melbourne venture. This time from Broadsheet Media: https://bit.ly/3VJXU9v

  • "Ross Lusted and Sunny Lusted could open a restaurant anywhere in the world. In fact, they have. In their roles as chef and hotelier for such luminaries as Adrian Zecha, founder of Aman Resorts, they have opened hotels and restaurants in 10 different countries, from Japan and Rajasthan to Fiji and Montenegro. But their next move, opening the 120-seater Marmelo at luxe CBD development Melbourne Place in September, feels like coming home." From The Australian Financial Review - The globetrotting couple behind Sydney’s acclaimed Woodcut are heading south for their latest restaurant venture, and we couldn't be more thrilled to be part of its design. https://bit.ly/3L4qWM6

  • Love seeing these photos come in of Txakolina, the Speakeasy situated on the 18th floor of The Lana, Dubai - Dorchester Collection. #designedbymitchellandeades Basque restaurants are traditionally quite masculine and monochromatic, but The Lana wanted this space to be more feminine. Basque culture only celebrates female Godesses, and our concept was formed around Mari – Queen of Nature. Mari moved from mountain to mountain on the back of a fire breathing dragon. Through the fire of basque cooking, the materials, furniture and lighting – the interior at Jara, personifies Mari. A secretly located cigar lounge, this venue serves more than 45 cigars from Cuba to the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Honduras, that can be aged by guests with the spirit of their own choice, while they enjoy the smooth sounds of Vinyl and sip on the finest spirits.
