✅ Landmine Detected! We have been trialling our MVP in Angola under the care of Ronan Shenhav and The HALO Trust, and we are absolutely thrilled to confirm that it has successfully detected landmines. This is an important milestone in our journey of developing new detection capabilities to speed up landmine clearance. The persistence of David Miljak and CSIRO to continue advancing the field of magnetic resonance, and the development efforts by Peggy Schönherr, Lewis Robertson and the rest of the CSIRO team is outstanding. Thank you to everyone involved with supporting our efforts!

Founder & CEO MRead - Magnetic Resonance of Explosives and Drugs

MRead participates in AUSA and UN Meetings in New York - prior to field trials in Angola in November 2024 MRead Limited was thrilled to be part of the Team Defence Australia (TDA) stand at Association of the United States Army - AUSA in Washington DC 14-16 October 2024. The TDA team were simply excellent and gave us a platform, a reach and a voice that a small company like us would not normally be able to achieve. With over 700 exhibitors and 33,000+ attendees, it was a large conference by any standards. The US Army is conducting its largest modernisation in 40 years. Some key themes were: 1. Ukraine has prompted a revolution in warfare. The scale of unmanned systems is unprecedented: 3.5 million drones deployed this year – Russia 1.5m and Ukraine 2.5m with new drone models every 2 weeks. 2. US leadership is key and must be ‘at the speed of relevance.’ 3. Large Scale Combat Operations is the focus now. 4. Recruiting is a major challenge - the US Army is succeeding. 5. Need to build a stronger culture of innovation. 6. Must integrate allies / partners to achieve their own long-term goals. 7. Must win in all Domains - Land, Maritime, Air, Space and Cyber. The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) has been simply excellent and our thanks to Major General David Coghlan AO and the whole TDA team for their support and advice – it really made a difference. I also really appreciated the time Mountain Horse Solutions through Chris Witts took to explain the US market and how best to prepare for it. On a personal note, it was great to be able to catch up with some of my U.S. Army colleagues from my previous deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following AUSA, we went to the United Nations for discussions kindly coordinated by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) through Richard Boulter, Chief of Design, Operational Support and Oversight, UNMAS and a host of International Military Advisors. The highlight of the New York visit was meeting Major General Cheryl Pearce AM CSC, the UN Military Advisor for Peacekeeping Operations. She outlined some of the issues and challenges facing the UN as it deploys forces across the world. After AUSA and the UN meetings, we are now deploying to Southern Angola for field trials with The HALO Trust. Our partnership with The HALO Trust has been first rate and supporting humanitarian demining has been extremely rewarding, particularly in the light of the tragedies we see unfolding around us every day. The preparations in Australia went extremely well, but we are now at the pointy end of proving how well it works in real minefields – it really is exciting. Thank you to all those who supported and championed us. #innovation #scienceandtechnology #humanitarianaid #startups #sensortechnology #humanitariandemining #standwithukraine #landmines #AUSA #Research #australianmanufacturing #Validationandverification #Testandevaluation Rob Adamson Henry Hamilton Dr Nick C. Founder & CEO MRead - Magnetic Resonance of Explosives and Drugs

MRead's Handheld Detector showcases at Land Forces International Land Defence Exposition in Melbourne prior to field trials in Angola in Nov 2024. MRead Limited introduced its next generation game-changing explosive and drugs detection sensor which is building on CSIRO’s world-leading technology. Henry Hamilton and I were ably supported by our Executive Chair Rob Adamson from RFC Ambrian. We are partnered with The HALO Trust to reduce the terrible global landmine legacy, as well as with Minelab Metal Detectors who are global leaders in metal detection. The direct standoff detection of explosives and drugs could revolutionise mine clearance and enhance land release rates by a magnitude of 10 times faster. Whilst MRead’s initial focus is humanitarian demining, we also have clear roles in law enforcement, border security and Defence. LF24 was a significant milestone in our journey to eradicate the threat of landmines globally and we were delighted with the support we received from The Honourable Kate Lundy, Ms Karen Schilling and the whole ACT Government team who were fabulous advocates for us. The opportunity and the platform they afforded us was exceptional. High points were briefing the Deputy Prime Minister The Hon. Richard Marles, Chief of Army LTGEN Simon Simon Stuart and MAJGEN Jason Blain, DSC, AM, CSC Head Land Systems who shared his extensive Afghanistan experience with us. We were also delighted with the support we received from a range of companies, including L3Harris Technologies, EPE. Trusted To Protect, UNSW Canberra Launch and Leidos Australia. Our discussions regarding integrating our sensors on remote platforms confirmed the clear and urgent need for this. Looking Ahead - Angola We are in a period of extremely rapid development and we are deploying to Angola with CSIRO in Nov 2024 to conduct field trials in live minefields with The HALO Trust which is absolutely fundamental for us. The superb design of the sensor has been vital to our progress and we are in a great position for the Angola trials. Successful conclusion of the Angola trials is our launchpad for further detailed trials in early 2025 with a view to being in production in early 2026. This would transition from a scientific laboratory experiment in 2023 to a sensor that can saves lives globally in 3 years. Thereafter, we will be developing our sensors for the broader Defence, border security and law enforcement environments. Being at the leading edge of a technology that can potentially help the deminers and the shattered communities recover in these war-torn areas is inspiring and it was so rewarding to see how strongly this resonated with the others we meet at LF24.   Thank you to all those who supported and championed us. #innovation #scienceandtechnology #humanitarianaid #startups #sensortechnology #humanitariandemining #standwithukraine #landmines #Research #australianmanufacturing #Validationandverification #Testandevaluation Dr Nick C.

Founder & CEO MRead - Magnetic Resonance of Explosives and Drugs

Successful Brisbane Lane Trials for MRead's Handheld Detector From August 5-9, 2024, MRead Limited's handheld detector was tested outside the lab for the first time, at the EPE MILTECS site in Brisbane. The sensor's performance not only met but exceeded expectations, proving its robustness and accuracy under intensive testing. This milestone is a testament to the hard work of our team, the innovative scientists at CSIRO who delivered the product and RFC Ambrian who have been the bedrock of our development. Why does this matter? Our MVP (minimum viable product) successfully operated across five different soil types at depths down to 13 cm, adhering to the strict United Nations International Mine Action Standards (IMAS). This achievement sets the stage for our upcoming field trials in Southern Angola with The HALO Trust. The collaboration with the HALO Trust has been instrumental, providing critical insights into both technology and user operator requirements. Australian Innovation & Collaboration: We conducted an excellent session with The HALO Trust and we also hosted a visitor day, showcasing the sensor to partners including Norwegian People's Aid / Norsk Folkehjelp, Minelab Metal Detectors , Katapult, and EPE. Trusted To Protect. The input from these supporters has been invaluable in enabling us to drive this disruptive technology so far and so fast. An MOU between MRead and EPE further enables a collaborative framework for the development of integrated sensors on robotic platforms in support of humanitarian demining, border security, law enforcement, and defence. Design & Usability: Fundamental to the design of the sensor is understanding the user requirement. If it doesn’t look and feel right – it usually isn’t! Our discussions with The HALO Trust, CSIRO, EPE and Katapult on operator form/fit are crucial as we refine the sensor from a prototype into a highly usable and manufacturable system. Looking Ahead: It's genuinely exciting to be at the forefront of technology that can make a real difference to deminers and the shattered communities in these war-torn regions. The MOU between EPE and MRead establishes a collaborative framework for further integration, testing, evaluation, and enhancing detection capabilities for explosive hazards in these challenging environments. The trials were, and will continue to be conducted at MILTECS, EPE’s Military Training, Evaluation, Certification, and Systems site which is co-located at the CSIRO Queensland Centre of Advanced Technology (QCAT) in Brisbane. The site enables testing utilising four counter explosive hazards dismounted lanes of various soil types and conditions, ensuring rigorous validation of our sensor’s capabilities. #innovation #scienceandtechnology #humanitarianaid #startups #sensortechnology #humanitariandemining #standwithukraine #landmines #Research #australianmanufacturing #EOD #demining #Validationandverification #Testandevaluation Warwick Penrose Robbie Wild Narelle Hoffman

Amazing what the RAF achieved against such enormous odds in the Battle of Britain. My uncle SGT Martin Shanahan was a Hurricane pilot from 1 Squadron (RAF Northolt / RAF Weald) who was killed on 15th August 1940 when they were ‘bounced’ over the channel off Weald, Kent by a covering force of Me109s from 3/Erpr.Gr.210 and the whole of Red Section – F/Lt. M Brown, P/O D Browne and Sgt. Shanahan – were shot down, the latter two being killed. He had been in the Squadron 2 weeks. Great to see Gp Capt Paddy Hemingway looking so strong and fit.

We are delighted that Matt Gerges has recently joined us at MRead. He has a wonderful pedigree - academically, professionally and personally and he is already making a real difference. He is the first scientist we have recruited as we now gear up for the MRead Minimum Viable Product (MVP) where we will continue to work closely with CSIRO. We have our Lane Trials scheduled for August in Brisbane with EPE. Trusted To Protect and Field Trials with The HALO Trust in Southern Angola in September 2024. It as been a fascinating and high tempo 15 months and our technology is showing fantastic promise. In addition to partnering with The HALO Trust, we have been overwhelmed with the support and advice that we have also received from the wider NGO community through Norwegian People's Aid / Norsk Folkehjelp, MAG (Mines Advisory Group) and the Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp. The continued support that we have received from Minelab Metal Detectors has been fundamental to our success, as we now move from concept to delivery! Welcome again to Matt who is going to be key to us successfully completing this journey. Exciting times!

Founder & CEO MRead - Magnetic Resonance of Explosives and Drugs

MREAD ATTENDANCE AT THE 27TH UNITED NATIONS NATIONAL DIRECTORS MEETING (NDM): 29th APRIL – 01 MAY 2024 AND VISIT TO THE HALO TRUST IN DUMFRIES John Shanahan from MRead Limited recently had the pleasure of attending the 27th International Meeting of Mine Action National Directors and United Nations Advisors from 29 April – 01 May 2024. The UN Meeting for a small startup such as ours was extremely useful. To be able to see the National Directors and the supporting and enabling organisations and agencies was gold dust. The three days were open, honest and enabled small organisations such as ours to mingle, discuss issues and better understand how we can support them. It really brought the realities and challenges to life. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with some old friends. In addition, Her Excellency Ms Amanda Gorely, the Australian Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations has been a wonderful example of making a difference and she has been a great ambassador for us, including hosting a lunch for us so we could meet some of the key players in Geneva. The fact that 60 million people are affected by mines and explosive ordnance in over 60 countries and territories worldwide is a terrible statistic. The outstanding work the mine action organisations undertake and especially their teams on the ground who are facing the harshest environmental conditions in war zones is humbling but also invigorating when you see the difference they make to these shattered communities. However, there is still so much to be done and we need to find new and better ways to address this. Our own journey over the last 18 months has been strongly supported by many organisations and individuals who attend these meetings. The partnership with RFC Ambrian, CSIRO and Minelab Metal Detectors has been excellent and we would be nowhere as advanced as we are without the advice and support of the NGOs and agencies that support demining. We have learned so much from them. During the Conference, I was also extremely fortunate to be able to spend some time with James Cowan the CEO of The HALO Trust. This was immediately after our excellent visit to The HALO Trust Headquarters in Dumfries for an extended session on how we could further develop our partnership. The location (and the weather) was just amazing! My sincere thanks to the whole HALO team who were extremely generous with their time and advice on the significant complexities and logistics of moving people and equipment around the world. We are very much looking forward to continuing to develop our sensor in the coming months with lane trials scheduled in Brisbane hosted by EPE. Trusted To Protect followed by field trials with The HALO Trust in Angola. It is a very exciting time and we are moving at a rapid pace! #innovation #scienceandtechnology #humanitarianaid #techstartups #sensortechnology #humanitariandemining #standwithukraine #landmines

Associate Director at RFC Ambrian Limited | Chief Operating Officer at MRead Limited

I had the fortune of representing MRead Limited at the 20th International Mine Action Symposium in Cavtat, Croatia. I presented to the conference MRead's advances in Magnetic Resonance sensing, providing some context as to how our technology works, the challenges we are facing and shared our plans for trialling our first prototype. I am pleased to say that there was a lot of interest in our new technology from the demining ecosystem. It was quite the experience presenting at an international conference. I have a lot of respect for the translators who had to translate such technical presentations in real time. A copy of my presentation can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dFqHh3NT   I thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from 35 countries who are working on achieving a common goal, removing the threat of landmines. This translated into open and honest conversations, and for someone who is learning about the industry (it is unfortunate that humanitarian demining could be called an industry) it was especially helpful to have these conversations. It was great to make friends from around the world who are operating in this space. A big thanks must go to HCR-CTRO for organising such a well-run conference and all the legends who are working in the space.   Croatia is also quite a nice place to have a conference, would recommend. 5 stars
