While there is 332 million cubic miles of water on Earth🌍, only 3% of this is fresh water and even less is available for human use. How we manage and protect this vital resource shapes our environments, economies, and communities. Recently, we had the privilege of engaging with a delegation from Vietnam, hosted by AMPERES and Alluvium Group, to exchange insights on water management and sharing. We were proud 😃 to showcase the #MurrayDarlingBasinAuthority experience in Australia’s approach to water management and the lessons we've learned along the way. #MDBasin #Freshwater #riversforgenerations #internationalcollaboration
Alluvium supporting delegation from Vietnam on river basin management In late 2024, AMPERES and Alluvium hosted a delegation from Vietnam’s Department of Water Resources Management (DWRM), part of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE). The delegation also included representatives form the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Planning & Investment, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Government's Office (Department of Agriculture), and Vietnam National Mekong Committee. Supported by the Australian Water Partnership (AWP), the visit aimed to aid the development of river basin organisations in Vietnam following the enactment of their Law on Water Resources in July 2024. DWRM and MoNRE are tasked with establishing robust river basin organisations, so were keen to hear about Australia’s river basin organisation establishment and the Murray-Darling Basin Plan, as well as broader water sharing and water management approaches. A special thanks to our speakers and guides from the Murray-Darling Basin Authority, the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water , the Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia, the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, WaterNSW, Sydney Water and the City of Sydney. We thank our Vietnamese and Australian partners for their engagement and look forward to continued collaboration in water management.

🥵🌡️Think December felt hotter than usual? You're not imagining it. The Bureau of Meteorology reports that Australia’s national area-average mean temperature for December was 1.88°C above the long-term (1961–1990) average – the third warmest December on record for Australia since 1910. Just noting, that the high national area-average is influenced by significantly above average temperatures outside of the Basin. Across much of the Murray-Darling Basin, minimum and maximum monthly average temperatures were largely above average to very much above average. Read more in the climate summary for December 2024 👇

🌟 Six grads. Eleven months. One graduation🌟 Vincent, Kasha Colgan, Niall Earle, Tanya Martin, Seamus Adams and Olivia Vane-Tempest have just wrapped up their time in #OurAPS Graduate Program, all while gaining hands on experience in water management and making network connections. They’ve worn many hats, from stepping into acting roles to driving industry analysis and assisting in projects that left a mark on the MDBA. 💡 The real standout moment? Getting their boots muddy in the #MurrayDarlingBasin and experiencing firsthand the economic, social and environmental wonder that we strive to protect for future generations. This program gave them the freedom to explore different opportunities and discover where they best fit. Congratulations graduates we couldn’t be prouder of what you've achieved during the Graduate Program. 💼 If you’re thinking about joining the program in 2026, watch our LinkedIn for when applications open. #riversforgenerations #mdbateam #graduateprogram #careerwithpurpose #AusPublicService #AustralianGovernment

Despite being from different Basin regions our Regional Engagement Officers share the same deep connection to their communities. The key link between them is their shared responsibility in listening to and advocating for the needs and priorities of the communities they represent. In the north, we have Annabelle Guest. With more than 30 years living and working in Northern NSW, Annabelle has spent the last 6 years as a Regional Engagement Officer (REO) in the Namoi and Gwydir catchments. Her role is all about creating spaces for people to share their thoughts, knowledge, and concerns about water management in the Murray–Darling Basin. With key Basin Plan milestones on the horizon, Annabelle continues to ensure the voices of her community are heard. Meanwhile down South, Kate Bartlett covers the region below Lock 1, including the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth catchments. She’s spent many years in local community roles across water, farming and irrigation, and has developed a deep understanding of her local community and the water challenges they face. Kate draws on this knowledge to build strong connections with farmers, First Nations groups, and councils, ensuring their thoughts and concerns are brought to the forefront of water management discussions. 👉Learn more about our REO's work in our newsroom article 📔: https://lnkd.in/gV2-6ANW #localknowledge #rivercommunities #riversforgenerations #mdbateam #murraydarlingbasin #CommunityEngagement

🎄 ✨ Season’s greetings from all of us at the MDBA. We are grateful for the collective efforts contributing to the health and sustainability of the Murray–Darling Basin. As we get ready to welcome in the new year, we’re looking back on some big moments from 2024. ✔️Released the Early Insights Paper for the 2026 #BasinPlanReview, paving the way to tackle some of the Basin’s most complex challenges. ✔️Completed the Hydrometric Networks and Remote Sensing program. It delivered a robust network for hydrometric stations. ✔️The north-south connectivity trial in the Darling Baaka delivered positive outcomes, including improved water quality. This was possible thanks to collaboration with agencies and the local community. ✔️Sixteen of the 20 Water Recourse Plans for NSW are now accredited, with the remaining four in New South Wales still being finalised before submission. This will help establish clear rules for water management, ensuring sustainable use and supporting healthy rivers and communities across the Basin. ✔️We hosted the Murray–Darlin Water and Environmental Research Program (MD-WERP) Symposium in June, bringing together experts to discuss topics like climate adaptation, hydrology and environmental outcomes. 🥾💧 At the same time, our Chief Executive Andrew McConville toured much of the Northern Basin, joined by local community members, First Nations representatives, MDBA staff and water experts from across governments. Visiting the Namoi Gwydir, Barwon Darling, Lower Darling, Macquarie, and Condamine Balonne catchments. In the southern Basin he visited all 13 catchments, with several visits to Menindee in the Lower Darling catchment. We also hosted 15 individual forums and connected with locals, governments and First Nations peoples across the Basin. We held our regional water conference in #Albury, updating communities on the release of the Early Insights Paper and heard from experts in their field. Focusing on true connectivity, beyond just infrastructure, we built strong connections with Basin communities. With progress made, there’s still much to do. It’s been busy, but we couldn’t be prouder of what’s been achieved. Here's to continuing our work for the Basin, its communities, and the generations to come. 💙 #MurrayDarlingBasin #Riverforgenerations
