Australia has signed the Statement on Inclusive and Sustainable AI for People and the Planet in Paris, progressing international efforts to strengthen AI governance. Our colleagues at the Department of Industry, Science and Resources attended the summit. Accountability is crucial in today's rapidly evolving digital landscape. As the first guardrail in Australia’s Voluntary AI Safety Standard (VAISS), accountability promotes the practice that AI systems are understandable, and their decisions can be explained. Why is this guardrail important? For businesses, accountability builds trust with clients and stakeholders, fostering a culture of openness and integrity. For Australia, this principle promotes a fair and just society where AI technologies are used responsibly and ethically. Guardrail 1: Establish, implement and publish an accountability process including governance, internal capability and a strategy for regulatory compliance. The UK has released the International AI Safety Report, bringing together insights from 100 AI experts across 30 countries and the OECD - OCDE, United Nations and European Union.   The report provides an authoritative, evidence-based overview of AI risks and mitigations. Professor Bronwyn Fox led Australia’s contributions to the international Expert Advisory Panel with support from Bill Simpson-Young (Gradient Institute), Professor Toby Walsh FAA FTSE FRSN (UNSW AI Institute) and Dr Liming Zhu (CSIRO's Data61). The report also includes contributions from Prof. Angie Abdilla (Old Ways, New) and the teams at Harmony Intelligence and Gradient Institute.
