This partnership project is an exciting step forward for fish welfare, and we look forward to gaining valuable insights that will enhance humane slaughter techniques, fish health, and overall product quality. It’s a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with Ethical Seafood Research and improve tilapia welfare during the harvest process in Egypt. #fishwelfare #tilapia #nautiluscollsboration #aquaculture #fishhealth
***Improving Harvest Practices in Egyptian Tilapia Farming*** We're excited to introduce our latest project, in partnership with Nautilus Collaboration, aimed at improving tilapia welfare during the 'harvest' process in Egypt. 🐟 Thanks to a generous grant, we'll be piloting initiatives to reduce stress on tilapia both during pre-slaughter and slaughter. The idea is to develop best practices that enhance both fish welfare and product quality. A couple of years ago, Nautilus Collaboration and The Center for Responsible Seafood - TCRS (Global Seafood Alliance) conducted trials in Central America at Regal Springs tilapia production facilities that showed that electrical stunning can be used to effectively slaughter tilapia much more humanely than the industry-standard chilling method. Humane slaughter techniques are yet to be adopted across much of the world and Egypt is no different. However, these previous trials provide good evidence of the potential benefits for both fish welfare and improved product quality. The results of our study will be shared with the Egyptian Aquaculture Association to support the adoption of these techniques. Learn more in our newsletter below, and stay tuned for updates on our journey in making Egyptian aquaculture more humane and ethical. We've already engaged around 15% of the country’s entire sector, potentially improving the welfare of over 260 million individual fish! And we're just getting started. #Aquaculture #EthicalSeafoodResearch #FishFarming #AnimalWelfare #Fisheries #Fishing #Science #Research #Egypt #Tilapia
