Sustainably ocean raised King Salmon from Aotearoa New Zealand

About us

At Akaroa Salmon, we are kaitiaki (stewards) of the pristine waters of Akaroa Harbour, where our King Salmon thrive in the cold Pacific waters that face towards to Antarctica. As an iwi partnership with Ngati Porou, Onuku Runanga, and the founding Bates Family, we are committed to long-term environmental sustainability and intergenerational development. Our team of dedicated experts, with a deep understanding of the local ecosystem, ensure the highest quality King salmon, rich in long chain Omega-3, selenium, and essential vitamins. By practicing Kaitiakitanga, we maintain the integrity of our farming practices, using no harmful chemicals, antibiotics, or pesticides. With our commitment to the land, sea, and community, Akaroa Salmon brings the rugged beauty of Akaroa Harbour to your plate with the finest King Salmon.

  • On Saturday December 7th 1985, Duncan and Tom Bates put the first salmon smolt to sea for Akaroa Salmon and celebrated with a glass of Champagne in the harbour. This past Saturday, nearly 39 years later to the day, we celebrated Duncan stepping back from the day to day slog here at Akaroa Salmon with a special gift. Willie Manuel and TeOne Tainui are pictured here presenting Duncan with a Tokotoko ( an orator’s staff ) carved by Riki Manuel from a whale bone found in Peraki Bay and a gnarled Ngaio branch that Willie had found nearly 20 years ago when working at Akaroa and had been saving for a special occasion. It was a great occasion to celebrate all the tough times, the wins, those no longer with us, and the support of all the staff and community in building Akaroa Salmon up from a single pen with 10,000 little smolt to a business that now employs over 80 people locally and distributes its product to 12 countries around the world, from Dubai to Dargaville. There must have been quite a high pollen count that day as everyone seemed to be getting pretty misty eyed…Me he manawā tītī, me tōhona hirika

We are stoked to announce that Akaroa King Salmon is the first King Salmon producer in the world to begin the Blue Impact feed program with BioMar. This is a whakawhanaungatanga (partnership) we've been developing over the past few years - first replacing wild caught fish oil with innovative farmed algal oil in our feed for some amazing Omega 3 results. Now we have started utilising other innovative products such as insect meal to minimise our impact on the marine environment and ensure the healthiest fish possible. This journey will see Akaroa King Salmon become a net-positive fish producer, committed to lowering its carbon footprint while incorporating regenerative and circular feed ingredients. Blue Impact feeds are designed as an individualised journey for aquaculture that requires continuous improvements across all three BioSustain™ impact parameters: Forage Fish Dependency Ratio (FFDR), percentage of circular and restorative raw materials, and carbon footprint. This is something Duncan, Ben, Willie, Lars and the whole team have been working on for some time as we look to honour our promises to be kaitiaki of Akaroa for this generation and the next. Big shout out too the team at Biomar to for working on this with us for so long to get where we are now and onwards into the future ! • Akaroa Salmon is now available in Japan! Uoriki Co Ltd is now supplying Akaroa King Salmon. Operating since 1930, Uoriki have become the most discerning seafood retailer in Tokyo, with over 70 outlets across the city so this is a very proud milestone for us. It was such a privilege to meet with Mr. Yamada, the chairman, and for Uoriki to choose our salmon. If you are in Tokyo, look out for Akaroa King Salmon! #akaroakingsalmon #sashimi #newzealandsalmon #kingsalmon

  • "Onamata, onāianei, anamata, mo te ake ake". This is our own whakatauki, gifted to us by Jymal Morgan from Ōnuku Runanga, that speaks of how we draw from our past, embrace the present, and build for our future. This guides what we do here at Akaroa King Salmon, a proud 100% Aotearoa owned partnership that includes Ngati Porou and Ōnuku Runanga. The principles of this whakawhanaungatanga (partnership) sign our commitment to: Long term environmental sustainability — so that our mokopuna (grandchildren) can enjoy the beautiful taonga that is Akaroa Harbour. An intergenerational view of development that goes beyond normal business practice. A commitment to contribute to the growth and opportunities for the Ōnuku Runanga, Ngati Porou people, and our local communities. #tewikiotereomāori #whakatauki #hāmana #supportlocal #intergenerationalsustainability

  • Loved working with Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre on this to showcase what we have here to our Aussie neighbours - great to see them working with the best of local produce and also having Darren Wright with Lumina Lamb and Doug of Poaka there with his amazing salumi. We're thinking there is a bigger Canterbury food story coming..... #NZfood

Last week, ICMS Australasia hosted their 'Bringing the world back home' event at Te Pae Christchurch, marking one year since opening their first NZ office. The seminar delved into the intricacies of bidding for major international events and highlighted the significant positive impacts such events have on both a country and local scale. A Farmers Market themed lunch showcased some of our amazing local suppliers from the Canterbury region. This included Poaka pork products, Lumina lamb, Akaroa King Salmon and our Executive Chef desmond davies, who shared the stories behind the stunning desserts we created for this lunch event. An enjoyable event for all involved! #ICMSAustralasia #tepaechristchurch #christchurchnz
