Resources and PD to empower teachers in Australia showcase Indigenous Knowledge in their classrooms.

About us

Ngarrngga is a Taungurung word meaning to know, to hear, to understand. The Ngarrngga vision is for all Australian students to connect with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems, histories and cultures - and be transformed by those deep understandings. To achieve that, we are creating innovative curriculum resources made by educators, for educators, in collaboration with Indigenous Knowledge Experts. These resources are rigorously tested and evidence-based. They are piloted in classrooms and refined based on teacher feedback. This means educators can have confidence in the quality and integrity of the Ngarrngga resources, knowing that they have direct links to the Australian Curriculum. Ngarrngga works with and supports educators, academics, pre-service teachers and educational leaders. These resources are complemented by the delivery of masterclass-style professional development. Ngarrngga is led by First Nations educators, supported by the University of Melbourne and is also proudly supported by BHP. As a Signature Project at the University of Melbourne, Ngarrngga is a collaboration between the Faculty of Education, Indigenous Studies Unit and Indigenous Knowledge Institute.

  • The Reconciliation Week 2025 theme has been announced! We are excited about how the theme, ‘Bridging Now to Next’, highlights the importance of education. We will be reflecting on the role education can play to forge a positive path towards reconciliation in the future as we plan for #NRW2025.

📣National Reconciliation Week 2025 theme announced📣 The National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2025 theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. At a time when Australia faces uncertainty in its reconciliation journey, this theme calls on all Australians to step forward together. Bridging Now to Next urges us to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us. In the #NRW2025 theme artwork created by Kalkadoon woman Bree Buttenshaw, native plants − which are known for regenerating after fire and thriving through adversity − symbolise our collective strength and the possibilities of renewal. This is a time for growth, reflection, and commitment to walking together. Australia’s history of reconciliation is not a linear one, we have made great strides and experienced disappointing setbacks. Twenty-five years ago, Corroboree 2000 brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous leaders in a historic call for reconciliation. We continue that work in 2025, inviting all Australians to join us in Bridging Now to Next - building a more united and respectful nation. See more information on #NRW2025: https://lnkd.in/d3hGDGY6 📌More assets, activity, and information will be released in February 2025. #Reconciliation #BridgingNowtoNext

I was honoured to receive the 2024 ACEL Vic Hedley Beare Educator of the Year Award this evening accompanied by Dad. To be recognised and nominated by an anonymous individual is extremely humbling to think the work I do is having impact and noteworthy enough for someone to take the time out of their lives to share their thoughts about me and my work. Thank you to the Australian Council for Educational Leaders for bestowing me with this award. And thank you to the individual who sent in the nomination. Ngarrngga University of Melbourne

We're honoured to share that the UNESCO-inscribed Donald Thomson Ethnohistory Collection, which provides rare insights into the rich cultural and economic lives of Indigenous peoples of Australia, has been gifted to #UniMelb by his family.    The landmark donation unifies the two parts of Professor Donald Thomson’s extensive field work under the University’s care after the Donald Thomson Ethnographic Collection was donated by Mrs Thomson in 1973.    The Ethnohistory Collection comprises materials from over 90 communities of origin as well as 11,000 photographs such as those that served as the inspiration for the award winning film The Ten Canoes.     We intend to build a Place for Indigenous Art and Culture on our Parkville campus to allow the united collections to be appropriately cared for and to enable community access. The project will incorporate the Donald Thomson Collection Study Centre, facilities for research and study of the Donald Thomson Collection and our digitised Indigenous Art and Culture collections.   Tap through to read more → unimelb.me/3OMPSJI

It is always a heart-warming experience to share in the joy of parents and families as they celebrate the graduation of their children. Today I attended the University of Melbourne Indigenous Graduate Ceremony with some of the 94 graduates and their loved ones. Congratulations all and congratulations Inala Cooper and the Murrup Barak team on putting together a fantastic event. No photos just a warm heart. This is why we do the work of Ngarrngga building the next generation of Indigenous university students

  • What does it mean to teach the traditional English curriculum in today's modern world? The VATE Conference's theme of ‘English at the intersection: Reclaiming our stories’ is investigating this question, and will feature a keynote from Ngarrngga Director, Professor Melitta Hogarth (PhD) and Professor Larissa McLean Davies, as well as a presentation from our Curriculum Team. Read our latest blog article written by Steven Kolber to learn more about some of the key ideas in the presentation. https://lnkd.in/gABPm66d
