Creating pathways for Aboriginal people on Noongar country from homelessness to home ownership.
About us
Noongar Mia Mia is an Aboriginal-owned-and-operated NFP contributing towards the socioeconomic inclusion of Aboriginal people on Noongar country in Western Australia, through a whole-of-person wraparound model of cultural housing, property management, psychosocial support, advocacy and collaboration. We understand the complexity of factors leading to Aboriginal homelessness, and we know how to overcome barriers and set the right foundations for our people to thrive. We are strong advocates of Aboriginal self-determination in the social sector; we embed Aboriginal culture into all we do, and amplify the voices of our mob – nothing for us, without us.

It was a great privilege for NMM to travel to #Anishinaabe lands to bring our Noongar perspective to Canada’s National Conference on Ending Homelessness in Ottawa 🏚️🇨🇦 Managing Director Tina Ugle, Programs Manager Leonie Pickett and Cultural Adviser Sandra Harben presented on our unique Noongar Housing First Principles. These principles govern how we support our mob on the journey from insecurity and homelessness to stable and secure housing. Our Canadian First Nations colleagues welcomed us and offered valuable insight into their approaches to homelessness. Thank you to the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness for the opportunity to participate, present and learn ❤️

This week we travelled to Langford for a yarn with the amazing HEART Program outreach team. We talked about Noongar history and culture, and what services Noongar Mia Mia offers to our mob who are sleeping rough in Perth/Boorloo. In the afternoon our Cultural Advisor Sandra Harben completed the team’s Noongar Housing First Principles training which provides community workers with the right tools to support First Nations people on the path to housing. The HEART program is led by our colleagues at St Patrick's Community Support Centre in partnership with Indigo Junction and Uniting WA, offering assertive outreach services to those experiencing homelessness across the Metro Area. Thanks to Langford Aboriginal Association for hosting us ❤️

🏚️❤️ Our Moorditj Mia (Strong Home) team are settling into their new office in Moore St, East Perth. Australia's only First Nations-led homelessness support service when launched in 2021, Moordjit Mia offers culturally safe outreach, case management and ongoing support. We've had some real success stories over the past year, and our relocation close to partners and other service providers means that we can better support our mob in Perth/Boorloo who are experiencing homelessness. Noongar Mia Mia's housing and tenancy support services remain open at Sussex Street, Maylands.

Have you seen the new Homelessness Dashboard on the Western Australian Alliance to End Homelessness new website? More information from the Centre for Social Impact below. Well worth a look
Multiple data sources, one dashboard to support the goal to end homelessness in WA. Designed and developed by CSI UWA for the Western Australian Alliance to End Homelessness, the comprehensive *Homelessness Dashboard* featured here takes a systems approach to measuring progress. By categorising outcomes across four key areas – homelessness trends, homelessness prevention indicators, the funding of homelessness and housing, and the Zero Project – it provides accessible reporting and crucial insights to sector agencies, government, peak bodies and the broader community. Dive into the dashboard (https://lnkd.in/g9umzPmh) to explore data from: ➡️ Source one: A service-based measure of homelessness and risk of homelessness using information from the Specialist Homelessness Services Collection (SHSC) of government-funded Specialist Homelessness Services (SHS) ➡️ Source two: The Australian Census which collects information on six operational groups including people sleeping rough, living in supported accommodation and temporary accommodation, and living in severely overcrowded dwellings among others ➡️ Source three: The Zero Project by-name list which is powerful tool for providing ‘live’ data on who is experiencing homelessness in a community where each person is known by their name ➡️ Source four: Report of Government Services 2024 which provides information on the government funding of homelessness services and social housing ➡️ Source five: Multiple datasets from different sources providing information on the key structural drivers of homelessness in the housing system, in family and domestic violence, the labour market and so on Paul Flatau The University of Western Australia Nick Mathieson John Berger BSW Nghia Luong David Pearson Shelter WA Kath Snell Zoe Callis

We are excited to welcome Adam Thumpston to our tenancy support team. It’s great to have you with us! NMM’s Tenancy Support team works one-on-one with tenants to overcome barriers to home maintenance, wellbeing and access to services. The individualised and culturally safe support we provide helps to ensure sustainable tenancies and keep our mob housed, connected and healthy.

We're delighted to be joining the extended HEART outreach program for people sleeping rough in Boorloo/Perth in partnership with St Patrick's Community Support Centre, Indigo Junction and Uniting WA! Well done to the St. Pat's team, working with Department of Communities WA to secure a grant extension to the program through to 2025, with services expanding to Rockingham and Stirling 👇
We’re pleased to announce that our Homeless Engagement Assessment Response Team (HEART) program for people sleeping rough, led by St Pat's in partnership with Uniting WA, Indigo Junction & new partners Noongar Mia Mia and the Department of Communities WA has been extended until 2025. A big welcome to Noongar Mia Mia, a highly experienced Aboriginal owned and operated housing, accommodation and Housing First services provider. HEART provides rapid, flexible outreach and intensive support primarily for people who are chronic rough sleepers across the Perth metro region – and now extended to include Rockingham and Mandurah - connecting them with local services and programs in their area and supporting them into accommodation. Thank you to John Carey MLA for your support and to the Cook Government for their investment in vital homelessness supports.
