A healthy community through quality care
About us
Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) is working towards being the leading regional local health district in Australia. “A healthy community through quality care” NNSWLHD provides a diverse range of public healthcare to over 300,000 residents across the district through 12 hospitals and multi-purpose services, 21 community health centres and other facilities. NNSWLHD covers a large area in north eastern NSW extending from Tweed Heads in the north to Tabulam and Urbenville in the west and to Nymboida and Grafton in the south, an area of 20,732 square kilometres. In 2011 the estimated population within NNSWLHD was 288,241, and is projected to increase by an estimated 16.3% by 2031.The population of persons aged 65 years and older is expected to increase by approximately 71% in the same period. People of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage make up 4.5 per cent of the population in Northern NSW compared to 2.9 per cent for all NSW. The District delivers a broad range of health services in state-of-the-art facilities, with access to general and specialist services. Staff are connected to best-practice medical care throughout Australia thanks to a growing network of training opportunities and relationships with local and metropolitan tertiary education providers. NNSWLHD is undertaking major capital projects at several facilities, which will support staff and clinicians in providing excellent care to the District’s communities well into the future. Continued developments in Information Communication Technologies and Integrated Care have also resulted in improved patient outcomes and hospital services.

Dr Tracy Lim has the honour of being the first Radiation Oncology Advanced Trainee to complete her specialist training at the North Coast Cancer Institute (NCCI) in Lismore. Leaving Australia’s largest cancer centre in Melbourne, Tracy committed to five years of training in Lismore, where she fell in love with both radiation oncology and the Northern Rivers community. “Everyone looked at me funny when I first told them I was going to leave Melbourne to go to the middle of nowhere. But I’ve never once had a single regret,” Tracy said. “The community is beautiful, the staff are wonderful, the patients are really, really nice.” With hands-on learning, close supervision and leadership opportunities, Tracy thrived. “I was successful at both my exams the first go, so it shows the training is fantastic, and the supervisors are great,” Tracy said. “The on-the-job learning that you get here is sometimes hard to get in a bigger centre. “I’ve had a richer, better experience by being here in Lismore. If anything, I think the training is superior.” Now a qualified specialist, Tracy says staying in Lismore would be an easy decision. “If you’d have asked me five years ago if I’d work here if a consultant job came up, I would have had to think about it,” she said. “But now, having lived here, it’s an easy decision. Definitely I would stay here!”

We’re excited to have received a $1.3 million grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council to tackle delirium, a common and distressing hospital complication affecting older Australians and their carers. The grant funds a three-year project that will build on the success of PREDICT, the Prevention and Early Delirium Identification Carer Toolkit piloted at The Tweed Hospital. The research collaboration involves Southern Cross, Sunshine Coast, Canberra and Sydney universities, Hunter New England and Far West LHDs, Canberra and Metro North Health Services, peak carer and consumer organisations, and lived experience patients. With national collaboration and a focus on systemic change, we hope the project aims to improve patient outcomes and ease pressures on healthcare systems. 👉 Learn more: https://smpl.is/9yadf Subscribe to our Northern Exposure e-newsletter and receive our news in your inbox: bit.ly/3oMXGBN #HealthInnovation #DeliriumResearch #NNSWLHD

Last week, we joined local universities and TAFE NSW at the Tweed Valley Hospital campus to celebrate the Northern NSW Academic Health Alliance. The Alliance is an innovative centre for clinical training, research and collaboration that brings together Bond University, Griffith University, Southern Cross University, TAFE NSW and us. It’s the first partnership of its kind in NSW! Housed in the Learning, Development and Research Building at the hospital campus, the Alliance helps students and researchers expand their skills and contribute to improvements in healthcare right here in Northern NSW. Its facilities include simulation and skills rooms, immersive learning and research spaces, a library, computer lab training and an auditorium. The first cohort includes medical, nursing and allied health students who are undertaking placements across Tweed, Byron and Murwillumbah hospitals. Check out more: https://smpl.is/9y02h

Happy Nurse Practitioner Week! This week, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible contributions of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) across our health facilities. These highly skilled Registered Nurses have additional qualifications that enable them to order investigations, treat people of all ages and diagnose a variety of acute and chronic health conditions. We’ve been celebrating our NPs’ dedication and expertise with Q&A sessions, morning teas, inspiring presentations and more across our Local Health District. It’s been a joy to see our staff come together to honour these healthcare champions. Let’s give a huge thank you to all Nurse Practitioners for their compassion, leadership and tireless commitment for our communities and healthcare workers.
