About us

The Northern Rivers Community Foundation (NRCF) connects people and communities to tackle challenging social and environmental problems in the Northern Rivers, NSW. NRCF is building a sustainable legacy for the future. We are a community-based independent foundation where donations are pooled and invested in ethical impact funds. Income from these funds supports our grant programs. This means we can provide a permanent source of funds to the community year after year. As our supporters continue to donate, our investment fund grows, and so does the grant funding. Since 2005, NRCF and our community of donors have granted over $1.9 million to over 300 organisations and projects that support families, young people, children, people with disability, indigenous, homeless and many more, who through no fault of their own are suffering disadvantage. We also recently embarked on funds and projects that support and strengthen our natural environment. In 2020, with the launch of the Resilience and Regeneration Fund, the NRCF is focused on bringing all our community resources together to fund solution-based responses to current challenges faced, as well as helping to build a community that is resilient to disasters and crises. Our mission: To connect people who care, with local causes that matter, to enhance community wellbeing.

  • We've received some really beautiful feedback and a lot of love for our 20 Years of Giving video: From Little Things Big Things Grow. At the heart of a community foundation are the people who support it, and we're so grateful to John Bennett, Leina Broughton, John Callanan, Annie Chapelle, Lynda Dean OAM, George Lewin and Janét Moyle, who shared their stories as part of this project. An equally big thank you to our featured grant partners: Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue, Chris Binge and Northern United Rugby League Football Club, Maximo Bottaro and ReForest Now, Daniele Constance, Tara Coughlan and Sprung!! Integrated Dance Theatre, Amanda Philp and Australian Turtle & Seabird Rescue, Carmen Stewart from It Takes a Town, Story Dogs, Clown Doctors – The Humour Foundation and Plan C. Your work is what creates the positive change in our Northern Rivers communities. Finally, thank you to Sharkey, Ash and Brenna from Value Imagery for being hands down the best crew to do months of intrepid filming and editing with, and to the talented TAFE crews at Kingscliff and Lismore. If you haven't had a chance to watch the video yet, we urge you to grab a cuppa and gift yourself 13 minutes of uplifting community content. You won't regret it. • We've been chuffed to host more than 120 of our community foundation colleagues from Australia and across the world, here on Bundjalung Country this week. Across four-action packed days we've exchanged ideas, shared knowledge and workshopped strategies to grow community-led change. Several NRCF team members including Amy Colli Sandra Duncan and our beloved bequest ambassadors, John Bennett and Paul Jameson, presented sessions to share insights from our successful Women's Giving Circle and bequest program. It's been wonderful to share our beautiful part of the country and the work of several local grassroots organisations including Jagun Alliance, Shedding, Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue, and Resilient Lismore who each hosted field trips. Thank you Ian Bird and Community Foundations Australia and all our community foundation peers who made the journey to the Northern Rivers - we've loved having you here. • Community Foundation people are our kind of people! Great to reconnect with our peers, learn, share ideas and celebrate the growth and impact of community foundations at the Philanthropy Australia conference in Adelaide. New DGR reforms will make impactful giving even more accessible through community foundations like ours. Sam Henderson Ian Bird Maree Sidey Ben Rodgers

We've spent the last three days at the Philanthropy Australia conference with a whole crew of community foundation friends joining us (see the "DGR reform cake" photo below...) Maree's new leadership is putting heart and honesty front and centre, creating a space and platform for collective, community-led philanthropy. And Minister Andrew Leigh MP, in his keynote address, singled out community foundations as the democratic, egalitarian social infrastructure Australia needs. This moment feels like a tipping point for Australian communities. A special, final nod of appreciation to Stacey Thomas, one of our board directors and CEO of the The Wyatt Trust, who delivered a simple and bold story of truth-telling. It feels incredibly meaningful to be a part of this support ecosystem, surrounded by kind people asking hard questions, and forging a new way forward together. • MEET THE TEAM: We've welcomed some new faces to our team recently, including Sandra Duncan who's heading up our donor engagement and Nicole Richards who's supercharging our storytelling & comms. If you've been in the philanthropy sector for a while, they might look familiar, with both having spent decades using their skills to help grow giving with organisations based in Syd & Melb. Both have deep roots in the Northern Rivers - one of them even comes from here. If you haven't met the rest of the team, let us introduce you to Kiri Dicker who heads up Impact & Grants, Amy Colli our Women’s Giving Circle coordinator extraordinaire and our intrepid CEO, Sam Henderson. Special shout out to our longest-serving team members: our finance whizz, Juanita Keen aka 'JK' and our grants guru Jen Smith who were off doing other terrific things the day this pic was taken. 🌟 We've got ambitious plans at the Northern Rivers Community Foundation and this powerhouse team of talented, smiling folk is going to help us get there.
