  • Christmas has come a little early for us with the addition of seven new trainee correctional officers in Darwin and eight in Alice Springs this week! 🎅 Their arrival comes at an important time during the busy festive season, and we are delighted to welcome them onboard to help us protect Territorians and improve community safety. Our newest recruits join us from Bosnia, Netherlands, Kenya, India and interstate, bringing unique life experiences and different strengths, which will serve them well in a dynamic and challenging corrections environment. Correctional officers are part of a responsive team who support, manage and rehabilitate people in the justice system. Our staff perform a range of roles across correctional centres – from prison industries, ranging from metal fabrication to carpentry, horticulture to food services; to specialist areas such as drug dog detection, prison security, and staff learning and development. We congratulate squadrons 113/24 and 111/24 for their hard work and dedication; we look forward to working with them to uphold the safety of our community. • Together, with the Southern Tanami Kurdiji Indigenous Corporation (STKIC), we are proud to announce the first graduates of our General Offender Program (GOP), held in Yuendumu this year. This new program has been designed to support male Aboriginal participants to reduce reoffending through positive behaviour change.   Over 13 weeks, participants committed to the intensive program, which is tailored to meet their unique needs and help them to address the underlying issues that contribute to offending behaviour. As a part of the program, each participant developed a Stay Strong Plan, an individual roadmap that supports them to avoid future offending and encourages healthy decision-making. On 18 December, the men completed the GOP, marking a significant achievement in their personal journeys toward positive change. We thank our community partners who have contributed to the program’s success and helped deliver meaningful change to the participants. We look forward to working with more individuals and making the community a safer place in 2025. #DepartmentofCorrections #northernterritory #rehabilitation

  • Pies delivered at Barkly Work Camp Last week the Barkly Work Camp (BWC) was visited by the Collingwood Football Club, led by Captain Darcy Moore, along with several other players from both the AFL and AFLW teams. The players used this opportunity to engage with prisoners through sports and the sharing of stories. As part of the visit, the footy team generously donated runners and footy boots to the camp. It was a day filled with mutual respect and a reminder of the unifying power of teamwork, sportsmanship, and the positive influence of sport.   A huge thank you to the Magpies for swooping in and making the trip out to Tennant Creek.   #DepartmentofCorrections #tennantcreek #barkly #barklyworkcamp #northernterritory #collingwood #magpies #footy #AFL #AFLW

  • Clarke comes with the furniture 🪑 Damien Clarke, Chief Industries Officer for Cabinetmaking/Carpentry, celebrates 38 years with Territory Corrections! This milestone makes Clarke the current longest-serving Correctional Officer in NT corrections history and second overall. Clarke’s career spans many decades, diverse roles and multiple locations. He joined corrections in 1986 as a Custodial Officer before working as an Acting Senior Prison Officer and Acting Chief Industries Officer at Beatrice Hill Prison. At the prison, he engaged in fencing and working with stock and horticulture. The prison farm worked with the Department of Primary Industries on the eradication of Mimosa on the Adelaide River flood plains till the prison closed in 1990.   From 1990 – 1995, he worked as a Prison Officer at Gunn Point Prison Farm, before being promoted to Chief Industries Officer of the piggery and poultry section. In 1995, he returned to Darwin Prison, working in horticulture before transitioning to the Community Work Program, where he supervised prisoners working on community projects, such as maintaining pensioners' yards. In 1998, Clarke answered the call to help Katherine residents when the town flooded. He volunteered to assist with flood damage mitigation and recalls driving across the Katherine River bridge, where the water had risen over the wheels of the truck. Clarke later worked for several years at Berrimah Prison, even creating 1000 beds for the future development of the Darwin Correctional Centre at Holtze. At DCC, as the carpenter on site, he supervises prisoners engaged in prison industries crafting wooden furniture, cabinets, jewellery boxes and more. When asked what the future looks like Clarke says he has about “16 months left in the tank” until he officially retires. Daniel Laubsch, Principal Industries Officer highlighted Clarke’s impact “His most significant contribution to the correctional system lies in his exceptional mentorship of Indigenous prisoners. He demonstrates an extraordinary ability to guide and support Indigenous individuals in his care, providing them with invaluable mentorship and fostering their personal growth.” #DepartmentofCorrections #northernterritory #correctionscareers

  • *Corrections Infrastructure Masterplan – Update* Our progress at the Berrimah Correctional Centre (BCC) is continuing at a high pace and we are on track with our timeframes to be operational by December, reducing pressures on our staff and prisoners. The Commissioning team has been working hard to make BCC a safe and secure environment. The team showed their progress last week to almost 50 of their colleagues with more site tours to be arranged later this week. This week, the builders will hand over B block to the Commissioning team as they move to the next stage of getting the cells ready for prison transfers. The team on site are focussing on trades who are continuing to work weekends and nights to support our collective efforts to bring on more critical bed placements. The Community Support Work Parties (CSWP) team have been on site supporting builders and have done an amazing job tidying up the site ready for occupancy. “We have delivered a very important milestone and congratulations goes out to all involved. We are progressing as fast as possible to bring beds online to help address overcrowding across our correctional facilities” – Dr Yolonda Adams, Deputy Commissioner Infrastructure masterplan – https://lnkd.in/gnzQKyj3 #DepartmentofCorrections #northernterritory
