International Pathology Series 🎉 On 25 November 2024, the PathWest Armadale Health Service Emergency Department (ED) Phlebotomy Service officially commenced, marking an exciting new chapter in patient care. This dedicated service is designed to support the Armadale Health Service ED by streamlining blood collection, reducing wait times, and enhancing diagnostic efficiency for patients and staff alike. The first patient serviced represents a significant milestone for PathWest and the Armadale Health Service ED, as it highlights our shared commitment to providing exceptional, patient-centred care. The on-site phlebotomy team will now handle urgent blood collections directly within the ED, which will supportmedical and nursing teams to focus more fully on immediate patient needs and complex cases. This service will soon be expanded to include cannulation services. This collaboration between PathWest and the Armadale Health Service ED is a testament to our dedication to continuous improvement and innovation in healthcare. By embedding phlebotomy and cannulation services within the ED, we aim to enhance both the patient experience and clinical outcomes, particularly during high-demand periods. Congratulations to everyone involved in launching this vital new service. #publicpathology #internationalpathologyday2024 #internationalpathologyseries2024 Public Pathology Australia East Metropolitan Health Service

International Pathology Series 🎉 Our Haematology Stem Cell Laboratory at the QEII Medical Centre (QEII) plays a vital role in the treatment of patients with blood cancers at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) by processing and preserving stem cells to support their treatment. Additionally, the laboratory helps advance research by supporting clinical trials at Perth Children’s Hospital and SCGH. This includes CAR-T cell therapy studies, helping patients access these exciting treatments across a range of blood cancers, as well as playing an important role in the biobanking of diagnostic and follow-up samples for future study. Through these initiatives, our laboratory is fully committed to improving patient care and contributing to impactful medical research. #publicpathology #internationalpathologyday2024 #internationalpathologyseries2024 Public Pathology Australia

International Pathology Series 🎉 We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding positive feedback received by our PathWest Phlebotomy team at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH). Patients and families have praised the team’s exceptional care, noting the calming presence and professionalism of phlebotomists Nicola and Grace. One parent shared, 'The care and skill shown by Nicola and Grace set our minds at ease. Watching them work together—quickly, safely, and efficiently—was fantastic, especially as they praised my child for being strong. It made all the difference.' Families have also noted the team’s thoughtful communication, from the receptionist explaining wait times to the phlebotomists’ kind, patient-centred approach. Another parent expressed, 'The experience was truly 10 out of 10. The phlebotomist showed genuine kindness and interest in my child, making this the best experience we’ve ever had.' International Pathology Series 2024 🎉 Congratulations to five of our PathWest Biochemistry Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) scientists who have recently achieved their National Certification of the Medical Laboratory Scientific Workforce (CMLS). Our scientists include Julia Aldworth (Medical Scientist, Cardiovascular Genetics, FSH), Patricia Burson (Medical Scientist, Core Biochemistry, FSH), Teagan Davis (Medical Scientist, Core Biochemistry, FSH), Julie Maxwell-Brahms (Medical Scientist, HPLC/LCMS Section, FSH) and Felicia Shaddick (Medical Scientist, Special Biochemistry, FSH). In 2020, the Australian Council for CMLS launched a national certification scheme for medical laboratory scientists and technical officers. Certification formally recognises scientists or technical officers who are appropriately qualified and competent, while acknowledging their rigorous commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) and education. This aligns with PathWest’s commitment to upholding standards of excellence. #publicpathology #internationalpathologyday2024 #internationalpathologyseries2024 Public Pathology Australia

International Pathology Series 2024 🎉 We would like to congratulate our winners and finalists from last night's WA Health Excellence Awards 2024. Congratulations to Dr Dominic Mallon, Dr Jack Bourke, Dr Lavinia Petrescu and Dr Brittany Stevenson for their outstanding work on the Virtual Immunology Clinic for General Practice (VIC-GP) project, winner of the Director General’s Award and Excellence in Primary Health Care Integration award in collaboration with South Metropolitan Health Service. The VIC-GP uses a novel automated workflow that allows General Practitioners, with their patients present, to access an Immunology Specialist, either in real time or later through a video call. We would also like to congratulate Amelia Ward from our Data Integrity Unit, a member of the Staff with Disability and Allies Network (SDAN), winner of the Excellence in Workplace Wellbeing and Culture award in collaboration with the WA health system. The SDAN was established as a forum for WA Health employees with disabilities or for those who wish to support health staff with disabilities to connect and share. Additionally, we acknowledge our Diagnostic Genomics and King Edward Memorial Hospital Haematology teams for their project, Introduction of non-invasive fetal Rhesus D genotyping for pregnant women in Western Australia in collaboration with North Metropolitan Health Service (Maternal Fetal Medicine) and Department of Health (WA Health) (Office of Population Health Genomics and Blood Unit, Office of the Chief Medical Officer), a finalist in the Excellence in Primary Health Care Integration category. International Pathology Series 2024 🎉 In late October 2024, our PathWest Haematology team at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) organised the WA Stem Cell Transplant and CAR-T Cell Therapy Workshop in collaboration with Fiona Stanley Hospital and Perth Children’s Hospital. This event provided a valuable opportunity for the 250 attendees, including adult and paediatric patients and their families, to learn about transplant and cell therapies and to connect with community support organisations that provide post-transplant services in Western Australia. Inspiring stories from guest patients who shared their transplant journeys touched not only fellow patients and their families but also the treating teams. Overall, it was a huge success, recognising the collaboration across teams, engaging with patients, and celebrating their remarkable achievements. #publicpathology #internationalpathologyday2024 #internationalpathologyseries2024 Public Pathology Australia

International Pathology Day falls on 6 November 2024, but we are celebrating it throughout November with a series of highlight stories showcasing the essential role of pathology in healthcare. Today, on the first of the month, we are delighted to congratulate our Diagnostic Genomics team, in collaboration with the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, for achieving national accreditation of a groundbreaking diagnostic technology. This world-leading technology will enable faster and more accurate genomic tests for patients with genetic neuromuscular conditions. NATA, Australia's leading accreditation body for laboratories, has officially approved the Bionano Sapphyr instrument, which has been installed at our Diagnostic Genomics laboratory since August 2022. The Bionano Sapphyr was generously funded by philanthropy through the FSHD Global Research Foundation in Sydney. Since the instrument’s installation, our team, alongside researchers from the Perkins Rare Disease Genetics and Functional Genomics laboratory, ran tests on patient blood samples to accurately diagnose facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Managing Director of FSHD Global Research Foundation, Emma Weatherley said that it was a remarkable milestone that Australians now have access to world class genetic disease diagnostics. To read the full story, visit https://lnkd.in/gAMHrum2 ➡️ Follow us on our social media channels and stay tuned for more stories in our International Pathology Series 2024, featured throughout November. #PublicPathology Public Pathology Australia #internationalpathologyday2024
