🌟 Pawsey’s Week in Review 🌟 Last week was dynamic and productive at Pawsey, with a focus on governance, strategic networking, and engagement with students and stakeholders – all vital to fostering collaboration and driving innovation. 🎉 Highlights include: 🔹 Intern and student engagement: Congratulations to Fathima Imra Haseen and Victor Olet for organising a fantastic workshop for Pawsey interns and ICRAR (International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research) work experience students. These sessions, supported by Cristian Di Pietrantonio, Christopher Harris, Emily Barker, Julia Szymanski, and our dedicated intern mentors, provided invaluable learning opportunities for the next generation of researchers and a stellar beginning to our 10-week internship program. 🔹 Inspiring future scientists: Fathima and Sarah Beecroft represented Pawsey at Curtin University's Maths Empowering Girls event, running a workshop for 75 girls – part of an incredible gathering of 280 Year 9 students! 💡 🤝 Strategic and governance milestones: 🔸 The Pawsey Board and Leadership Team hosted a dinner to bid a heartfelt farewell to Geoff Harben, retiring after over 20 years of service with Pawsey and its predecessor, iVEC. 🔸 Thursday’s Board meeting included a tour with Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Cathy Foley, and CSIRO Deputy CEO, Kirsten Rose FTSE GAICD. Dr Foley, a passionate quantum advocate, enjoyed visiting our quantum systems and taking a photo with our interns in front of Setonix. 🐿️💻 👥 Networking and collaboration: Mark S welcomed acting CIO Angus Macoustra to Pawsey and hosted ICRAR Chair Dr David Skellern, who also met our interns. David's visit underscored the strong collaboration between Pawsey and ICRAR. Coming up next week: ✨ Monthly maintenance ✨ Gregory Orange, Jeffrey Jiang, and Jeremy will represent Pawsey at Cephalocon 2024 at CERN after Greg’s productive week at the Technical University of Dresden. ✨Mark Stickells AM will be presenting at ICRI in Brisbane, and Fathima will present at the STAWA Future Science Conference. 🌟 Pawsey Wrap of the Week 🌟 Last week was packed with incredible activities showcasing Pawsey’s impact across research, education, and global supercomputing. Here's a recap: 🔬 Early Career and Researchers Engagement Fathima Imra Haseen and Victor Olet, supported by Ali and Mark Gray hosted a tour for the Early Career and Student Statisticians Conference participants, offering a close-up look at Pawsey’s facilities and capabilities, thanks to Curtin University's Prof Nicola Armstrong to help us showcase the value of Pawsey services to her community. Deva Kumar Deeptimahanti and Cristian Di Pietrantonio delivered a hands-on MWA Migration to Setonix training. 👩🔬 STEM Outreach Pascal Elahi and Edric Matwiejew presented a Quantum Girls initiative at the Quantum Victoria STEM Conference, unveiling a hands-on quantum computing workshop for high school students, met with enthusiasm by educators. 🌏 National and International Engagement In Canberra, Mark Stickells AM attended the ARC Board meeting, met with CSIRO and The Australian Academy of Science colleagues, and joined #NCRIS Directors to discuss collaborative opportunities. In the US, Maciej Cytowski, Basha, and Chris Schlipalius represented Pawsey at #SC24, the largest supercomputing conference: Maciej delivered a keynote at the #Sustainable Supercomputing workshop. Basha co-organised the Containers in HPC tutorial and Chris presented at the Architecta booth and led the HPC & AI user group meeting by Versity. At SC24, major announcements included: US supercomputer El Capitan debuted as the world's most powerful supercomputer and the German system JEDI retained its top spot in the #Green500, while Setonix ranked 20th globally and remains the most powerful and greenest supercomputer in the Southern Hemisphere. 🏆 Award Highlights: Pawsey researcher Prof Giuseppe M. J. Barca from the University of Melbourne and his team won the Gordon Bell Prize, dubbed the "Nobel Prize of Supercomputing," for their groundbreaking quantum molecular dynamics simulation using #Frontier supercomputer. WA's Carnegie Clean Energy won an HPCwire Award for their innovative AI-driven ocean wave energy solutions, developed in collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise team and using Pawsey supercomputer Setonix.
