Another Year Just Passed - How Did that Happen? PPB Technology Pty Ltd held its AGM last week. With half of our shareholders joining either in-person or online, I ran through PPB Tech's achievements from the past year and our plans for the future. Preparing for our third AGM gave me an opportunity to reflect on progress over the 12 months, an opportunity to focus away from the detail for a moment and review the bigger picture. A Revolution in Thinking About Milk Quality We used to think that only when free-floating (planktonic) Pseudomonas bacteria reached very high levels in raw milk would AprX protease be produced, leading to shelf-life problems in UHT milk products. If that was the case then "keep your milk cold and use it quickly" should avoid all issues. But reality is different. Our customers have told us that their UHT shelf-life is often shortened, even when levels of planktonic Pseudomonas had not reached high levels. Prompted by the pioneering work of Dr. Stefanie Gieschler, we realised that Pseudomonas biofilms throughout the supply chain could be another source of AprX protease. Over the past two years, we have seen the results of many AprX tests on raw milk from dairy processors. These confirm that very often AprX protease is present, generally when planktonic Pseudomonas counts sit well below the accepted threshold for AprX protease production. The take home message is that UHT processors can use our AprX protease test to detect and locate Pseudomonas biofilms in the raw milk supply chain. Australian Food Safety Week - Food Safety Information Council Before we came up with the #CYBERTONGUE Technology, my only hands-on experience of manufacturing was inside a handful of plastics extrusion, injection moulding and blow moulding factories. Yes, Lego® was one of them. But since we developed CYBERTONGUE®, I’ve seen the inner workings of many dairy plants across three continents. The care and rigour the vast majority of this industry puts into food safety is nothing short of breathtaking. Total respect for those who work in this area. And here’s the thing, most food poisoning incidents originate in the home. And that is the part of the food supply chain that is within our control as consumers. Here’s the talk that I walk: • Using a thermometer to check whether my fridge is really getting to 4°C • Reviewing the label for how long food can be refrigerated after opening • Dating refrigerated food containers when I first open them • Storing prepared food properly and ensuring that reheating is thorough and even. The InnovationAus Awards for Excellence - 2024 I've been a subscriber to the InnovationAus.com newsletter for a few years now. So, last night, it was an absolute pleasure to attend the 2024 Awards for Excellence event at The Venue in Sydney as the guest of Andrew Trusiewicz and Yaser Darban of Entech Electronics. It was a great opportunity to catch up with a number of old friends, David Burt a finalist in the Innovation Leadership category, Tennille Eyre who presented the Translation prize, Andrew Horsley one of the judges this year and Gilbert Michaca, who I first met back when CYBERNOSE® (sic) was a CSIRO thing. I was also able to network and make a number of new connections with those active in developing, funding, and supporting Australian tech and #deeptech companies. Yaser introduced me to Corrie McLeod who, with her partner James Riley, founded and publishes InnovationAus. I discovered that InnovationAus is based in Canberra, just like PPB Technology Pty Ltd. I would like to thank Corrie and James and InnovationAus for their contribution to Australia's Innovation ecosystem.
