Did you know only 3% of businesses scale beyond 20 employees? It’s brutal out there for business leaders and entrepreneurs, and when resources are tight and inflation is high, the odds can feel stacked against you. But there are great lessons and insights out there from founders and startups who have been on the journey and have been able to overcome the growth obstacles. Prospa co founder and CFO Beau B. sat on a SXSW Sydney panel with experts and leaders from Xero, Linktree and Sendle to discuss what it takes to become masters of scale, from crunching the numbers to actually doing it themselves. Here are some takeaways from that discussion: Beau B. on product fit and focus:  Scale is about replicating your core proposition in multiple markets. Once you’ve got product market fit with your business model, you need to ask yourself how we can make that 10 x or 100 x times bigger, to accelerate and monetise your product offering and expand to new markets. What works when you have five people, doesn’t work when you have 50 or 100 people. Staying focused and having a clear roadmap is vital to scale successfully. Louise Southall on the four Ps to scale:  To scale your business successfully, you should make these four Ps your north star: Purpose, Plan, Productivity and (my personal favourite) Partnerships. Without all four parts of the jigsaw, there will be gaps, and your growth will suffer. So lead with a clear purpose, have a long-term plan to regularly refer back to, make business decisions that drive increased productivity, and partner with great businesses that will grow with you. Anthony Zaccaria on hiring at scale:  While there is a certain amount of hustle culture required to get a startup off the ground, knowing when to hire the right talent to help you take it to the next level is key. In the early days, Anthony wore many hats from operations to customer support, and endured a lot of late nights. This was unsustainable, so Anthony and his co-founder shelled out $50k on a new hire. This paid dividends, not only taking extra work off their plates but giving them space to focus on what they do best as entrepreneurs - growing the business. Laura Hill on adapting to new markets:  No two markets are the same, but some might be more closer than you think. When Sendle expanded to the US, it was met with an entirely unique market, with its own logistical and legal challenges. However, Canada had more similarities in geography, consumer behaviour and logistical infrastructure which made it feel more like a neighbour than a distant cousin.
