We do not support the Making Queensland Safer Act. We do not believe it will make Queensland safer – it will do the opposite. In the past week, we have engaged with dozens of community organisations across Queensland to make submissions against the Bill. We want to thank everyone who has worked with us to try to protect children's human rights. QCOSS will continue to call for evidence-based policy, advocate to get children out of watch houses and fight for adequate funding for programs that help divert children from the criminal justice system. "The more we detain children – and the longer we detain children - the more harm we will do. And ultimately, the community will be less safe," QCOSS CEO Aimee McVeigh has told the 7:30 Report. We do not support the Making Queensland Safer Bill. We know that more early intervention initiatives, such as YFS Ltd's Resolve program, are what’s really needed to make the community safer. Watch this report, featuring Queensland Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak Ltd, YFS Ltd and the Queensland Human Rights Commission.

Congratulations to Ending Violence Against Women in Queensland (EVAWQ) who won the Women’s Equality Award at this year's QCOSS Community Impact Awards! The commitment to gender equality and relentless advocacy from organisations such as EVAWQ ensures that we are working towards a world where all women and girls feel safe, supported and respected. While 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence reminds us there is still a long way to go to achieving this, it is important to highlight the organisations fighting to make this happen every day. "Our members know what works to reduce youth crime and that is to deal with the root causes of crime," QCOSS CEO Aimee McVeigh told the Justice, Integrity and Community Safety Committee yesterday. "The Making Queensland Safer Bill will make community safety worse in the long term and it will harm some of the most disadvantaged children in our community." QCOSS strongly opposes the Queensland Government's Making Queensland Safer Bill, which seeks to legislate 'Adult Crime, Adult Time' laws and remove the principle of detention as a last resort. The harsh measures contained in the Bill will not make the community safer and are likely to result in the detention of more children for longer. This Bill will cause harm to some of the most disadvantaged children in Queensland. Read our full submission: https://lnkd.in/gtiqjW8B

"Retribution and punishment does not make the community safer. Rehabilitation and reintegration does." - Katherine Hayes, CEO of Youth Advocacy Centre (YAC) QCOSS does not support the Making Queensland Safer Bill. The ‘Adult Crime, Adult Time’ proposal will not make communities safer and is not consistent with Queensland’s human rights. Submissions on the Queensland Government’s ‘Making Queensland Safer Bill’ are now open and will close on Tuesday, 3 December at midday. Given the very tight turn-around time, QCOSS has developed this resource so that community organisations can make their own submission. Download the updated submission guide now: https://lnkd.in/gcTu_HpV
