  • The summer holidays are a time to unwind and catch up with family and friends, but sadly it’s also the peak period for drowning. Before heading out this summer learn how to enjoy the water safely: 💧 Know your swimming abilities 💧 Always supervise children around water  💧 Avoid alcohol around water  💧 Wear a lifejacket when boating and fishing   💧 Avoid going alone   💧 Know the conditions   💧 Swim between the red and yellow flags Read more by visiting:  https://lnkd.in/gxw5XQ3R #DrowningPreventionStartsWithYou #EnjoyTheWaterSafely #WaterSafety #SummerDrowningToll

  • With the days ahead expected to be particularly hot, we have issued an urgent summer water safety warning. Remember, drowning prevention starts with you. 🔵 Know your swimming abilities Don’t overestimate your or your love ones’ swimming abilities. Choose locations that match your skills and always prioritise safety. If you’re not a confident swimmer, stay out of the water. 🔵 Always supervise children around water Discuss ahead of time who will be actively supervising children around water. Active supervision means being within arm’s reach and never assuming "someone else is watching your child." 🔵 Avoid alcohol around water Decide in advance to avoid alcohol while swimming, boating, or supervising others. Alcohol clouds your judgment, impairs swimming ability and significantly increases your vulnerability to drowning. 🔵 Wear a lifejacket Pack lifejackets for boating, fishing and kayaking. Ensure they meet Australian standards and that you have a lifejacket for each person, especially children and older people. And make sure you wear them. 🔵 Check the conditions and change your plans Before leaving home, check the weather forecast and the location’s hazards. Rips, currents, and deep water can make waterways unpredictable. If there is any doubt, be prepared to change your plans. 🔵 Avoid going alone No matter how confident you feel, always plan to swim, boat, paddle or fish with someone else. Looking out for one another ensures a safer, more enjoyable time. 🔵 Swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags Lifeguards / Lifesavers are there to help if you get into trouble. Swim at a patrolled beach or a pool with lifeguards. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gxw5XQ3R #DrowningPreventionStartsWithYou #EnjoyTheWaterSafely #WaterSafety

  • The National Summer Drowning Toll 2024-25 is now live Our research consistently shows a peak in fatal drowning cases during these warmer months. Each year, we publish the Summer Drowning Toll to highlight the increased risks and help everyone stay safe around water. The National Summer Drowning Toll improves access to information for media, drowning prevention organisations and the public, enabling them to quickly find and use data. The site features an interactive dashboard to compare current data with last summer and the five-year average, with filters for state or national insights. These insights not only inform safety campaigns but also help ensure resources and messaging reach the most at-risk groups and communities, including men, children, and people from multicultural backgrounds. As we publish this platform, we remain ever mindful of the people behind these numbers. Those whose lives have been lost or impacted by drowning, including the many families affected by the loss or long-term injury of a loved one. Explore the interactive Summer Drowning Toll dashboard and learn more about our work here: https://lnkd.in/gjPKvfs2 #SummerDrowningToll #DrowningPrevention #WaterSafety

  • Artificial intelligence will help keep swimmers safe this summer at a popular City of Logan aquatic centre. The innovative drowning prevention technology, developed by Lynxight, which uses overhead cameras and specialist software to detect unusual movement in the water – has been installed at Gould Adams Park Aquatic Centre at Kingston. Lifeguards receive a real-time alert on a smartwatch that pinpoints the location in the pool where a swimmer could be struggling. It is the first time the water safety technology has been used in Queensland. “For those in our community who can’t swim or are not confident in the water – this could help save someone’s life,” Mayor Jon Raven, Logan City Council “The potential of combining lifeguard expertise with AI-enhanced drowning detection technology is a promising development for Logan and the broader community.” RJ Houston, RLSSA The camera technology, which Council plans to continue to roll out across other pools the coming years, also helps plan venue operations, by providing information about attendance, which in turns help with rostering and improving visitor experiences. Pool visitors can also be assured their privacy is protected as the technology monitors only general behaviour patterns and cannot capture facial or body imagery. #rlssq #lynxight #logancitycouncil #rackley

  • Logan public pool first in Queensland to use AI to help prevent drowning A Logan public pool will be the first in the state to use artificial intelligence to help prevent drowning. The system was recently installed at the Gould Adams Park Aquatic Centre at Kingston. AI is already used in public pools interstate, but it's the first time the technology has been installed in a Queensland pool. Royal Life Saving – Australia and Royal Life Saving Society Queensland Inc have received government funding to train lifeguards in the technology. https://lnkd.in/gc8WnJNS
