Last Thursday we joined our industry peers at Concordia College St John’s Campus, Highgate, to celebrate this year’s honours at the Learning Environments Australasia SA & NT Chapter Awards. We were proud to learn Russell & Yelland had received four independent accolades across eight categories. Nazareth Catholic Community Kidman Park senior campus was announced the Overall Winner, also taking out the second category for a New Campus with New Educational Facilities. The art, design and technology-focused Angelico Centre at Cabra Dominican College, Cumberland Park, won best New Building/s or Facilities – Small, while the Caritas Centre at St Joseph's School Port Lincoln received a commendation in the same category. Director John Held and Associate Lauren Knight accepted the certificates from LEA Director Marino Rossi. It is always a delight for our education projects to be recognised by industry, but particularly when official feedback suggests these projects are building stronger educational communities. The jury emphasised the strength of the design narrative in Russell & Yelland’s projects this year. For Nazareth Kidman Park, they noted: “A bespoke story has been wonderfully narrated and carefully graphically depicted for all to see and use for years to come. Nazareth’s vision of connecting faith, family and education is beautifully realised, aspiring to excellence and success for all as life-long learners.” Thanks must go to our hard-working team who have given so much to complete a vast and technically complex portfolio of projects over the past few years. Gratitude, too, for the educational communities with whom we work. We could not do any of this without your guidance and trust in our skill and process. Very excited to be a part of this fantastic project.
On behalf of the Cabra Board of Directors, we are delighted to officially announce the beginning of the Aquinas Precinct Project, which is Stage 2 of the College’s Master Plan. The Aquinas Precinct Project continues our long-standing tradition of providing learning spaces that are beautiful and functional, inspiring young people to seek excellence, and to be remarkable in their own way. Work has been underway for several months to ensure continuity of quality learning throughout the building process. Construction is set to begin early next year and we anticipate completion in 2026. We would like to thank the following for their hard work, commitment and vision: Russell & Yelland, Chris Sale Consulting and JAA. #truepossibility #aquinasprecinctproject

A unanimous jury decision for this year’s Australian Institute of Architects EmAGN Project Award serves as testament to R&Y’s belief in fostering young professional talent, recognising our work at Cabra Dominican College. The Angelico Centre is our fifth specialist facility delivered for the College in just seven years and a crucial milestone in realising the goals of a significant master planning exercise. Consecutive projects benefit both the client and architect and by the time we took on the Angelico Centre development, our team was long furnished with both depth and breadth of experience developing this site. Associate, Rhiana Bell, steered this project. One of her earliest career contributions was developing the award-winning designs for the Therese Sweeney Music Centre at Cabra alongside Director Stewart Caldwell. For the Angelico Centre, she paid it forward, fostering new talent in a particularly successful partnership with experienced graduate, Georgie Jackman (nee Warren). The jury noted: “The presentation strongly demonstrated Russell & Yelland’s commitment to fostering the professional development of its entire team. The whole Practice should be proud of this, as it is a highly commendable approach which the Jury are confident will have a compounding effect for many years to come… Rhiana Bell, the project lead and a beneficiary of past project experience and professional development, was empowered with a unique skillset to steer the project with confidence. She also maintained an approach of providing continual support, along with a platform for significant contribution, to the broader team. The specific collaborative dynamic between Rhiana and Georgie, with its clear flow of guidance and reciprocal learning, further exemplified this focus on nurturing talent. As a result, the built outcome not only displays design excellence, but coupled with the exceptional guidance and demonstrated impact on younger team members, it sets up the Practice and team for future success. This makes Cabra Dominican College: Angelico Centre a very deserving winner.” Read more about the Angelico Centre project via the link in our profile. What a joy to hear the new Kidman Park senior campus for Nazareth Catholic College won an Award for Educational Architecture at last Friday’s SA Architecture Awards! Despite being one of our larger education projects to date, we delivered some highly nuanced, finely calibrated design details; all within 1 per cent of the budget and to tight timelines. Invitations to meet and include are inferred in circular gathering spaces, which are then repeated in wayfinding motifs and rounded finishes throughout. Senior students and staff are quite literally embraced by the campus. The jury noted: “Working on a restricted ‘brownfield’ site, the team has optimised the use of space, with the College contained within a single U-shaped building, wrapped around a landscaped courtyard. Taking cues from the site’s market garden past, the curved sandblasted precast concrete and perforated mesh façade present a minimalist and clean finish to the building. The spatial programming provides clear delineation between key learning areas. Circulation rings the inner courtyard, giving rise to opportunities for informal gathering and interaction between staff and students as they transition between classes. The project builds identity and pride for the College community.” To see more of this flagship project, delivered in just 24 months, visit our website. Russell and Yelland is proud to have received a Commendation in Educational Architecture from the Australian Institute of Architects on Friday, for recognition of our diligent work in the delivery of Cabra Dominican College’s Angelico Centre. This project doubled Cabra’s art, design and technology capacity without expanding the footprint. Designing for such a tight site, we demonstrated utmost care in delivering a roomy, light-filled, flexibly planned building with capacity to adapt as curriculum inevitably morphs along with technology. The Angelico Centre first considers physical and spatial connections, but also demonstrates deeper ties to heritage themes across the site. The jury noted: “The design expression is distinctive and unique but also sits compatibly with the neighbouring structures; both recently built and heritage listed. The large structural element at the entry draws reference from heritage forms on the site while also acting as a memorable visual and physical statement.” Visit the R&Y website to learn more about the evolution of “the wiggle” and Cabra’s cutting-edge facilities, including a blackbox light experiment element.
