We stand as vanguards in an era of transformation, tasked with not only adapting but thriving. Architects are ambitious, and we have great aspirations for our Institute. We had an incredible week in Adelaide with the Australian Institute of Architects, Board meeting, National Council Meeting, National Awards and #ArchitectureAu's Design Speaks #Symposium curated by Gold Medalist Philip Thalis. Together across 3 days we considered the potential as we pivot to a low-carbon future, leveraging digital transformation and amplifying the value of architects' complex technical skills in the reweaving, remaking, and the evolution of cities where we do more with less. By overcoming barriers and embracing innovation, architects can transform challenges into opportunities, championing the value of good design. Change requires a growth mindset, great culture and mindful behaviors to build both collective and individual agency. Change requires evolution in our structures to enable transformation, innovation and value creation in practice. Together, we discussed how we can realize a future where our profession leads the charge against climate change, creating a world that values sustainability, equity, justice and great architecture for all. We are focused on making a positive impact as we advance architecture together, honoring our legacy whilst paving the way for the future of our profession, enabling everyone to benefit from great architecture. It was fabulous to engage across generations of the institute, but I must mention here the incredible future embodied in our EmAGN members. The incredible Jennifer McMaster winning the National Emerging Architects Prize. The inspirational #Bradley #Kerr at the symposium found a room in tears with emotion, empathy, respect for country and culture, newfound understanding / perspective and hope. Bradley powerfully communicated the importance of questioning our bias, and mental models that uphold existing structures beginning with the lesser known interpretation of the famous Descartes quote: “I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am.” The future looks bright across our diverse community as we advance architecture together. A world Architecture Day perspective. Dear UIA - International Union of Architects Council, As an architecture student, I appreciate the UIA's efforts to celebrate young architects and provide opportunities such as the upcoming UIA Young Architects Competition. However, while the theme of empowering the next generation is inspiring, I feel compelled to voice my concern regarding the broken architectural systems that many young architects face today. Despite the rhetoric of inclusion and participation, the harsh reality for many young professionals is a financial struggle that forces them to divert from their passion for architecture. The systems in place often do not offer the economic stability, mentorship, or opportunities needed to thrive. The profession has increasingly become inaccessible due to exploitative practices, inadequate pay, and a lack of proper support networks. These systemic issues have left many young architects disillusioned and financially unstable, leading them to abandon the field or pursue alternative careers where they feel more valued. The call to action for young architects to participate in urban design and contribute to sustainable development is ambitious, but how can we fully engage when the foundation we stand on is fragile? The profession needs reform beyond competition announcements and symbolic celebrations. We need to address issues such as fair wages, healthy work environments, and meaningful mentorship, ensuring that young architects are not only empowered to create but are also able to thrive financially and personally in this field. While I applaud the UIA’s commitment to showcasing young architects' ideas, let us also ensure that these same architects have the support necessary to build resilient careers within the profession. We must fix the broken systems that are holding us back. Respectfully submitted. To all the young architects out there: Your creativity and passion are essential in shaping the future, but never forget to advocate for your worth. While we are called to build sustainable cities, let us also build a sustainable profession for ourselves one that values our work, time, and potential. What does the value of an architect mean to you? Is it to just draw and design buildings and place their signature on drawings?

I believe when most people hear the words Green and Building these days they automatically think emissions reduction. Unfortunately, this one ideal has overwhelmed messaging on sustainability in Canada recent years. I've heard directly from clients that simply hearing the words Green or Sustainable on a project make them not want to do it because the perception is it won't add value. I'd agree with that if the only objective of sustainable development was to reduce emissions. Sustainable Project Delivery to me, means that 1) We adapt to changing social or economic project needs. 2) We are resourceful in finding practical solutions to overcome challenges posed by the environment, logistics or construction. 3) We build safe, healthy and resilient buildings. Sustainability isn't about making a building more expensive, its about generating positive financial, health and safety impacts for the client.

The role of the architect is about more than designing buildings. Architecture and space are always related to social issues and challenges. This means that architects may be well placed to contribute to the public debate on challenges that also will have a spatial impact: climate change, mobility issues, the housing crisis, healthcare and migration. This issue of OASE explores the possible roles of architects as public intellectuals and the ways in which they can contribute to society beyond design.
