I shared some thoughts on the Anxious Generation on the Safe on Social blog today. While I agree 'DELAY' is an important part of the equation of young minds x high tech, 'DEMONSTRATE' is totally AWOL from the (fear-fueled) conversation. Society, I would argue, also doesn't *really* like teenagers (too risky and noisy when outside, too addicted when inside on screens). Read it >> https://lnkd.in/gbbkkj_s

My social media feeds are awash right now with discussion of and deference to social psychologist, Jonathan Haidt’s new book The Anxious Generation. It’s a tome that argues for 4 ‘new norms’ to free young people from the shackles of the smartphones and social media plague. And it's driving my anxiety sky high. While a bunch of what h

Self-harm, pro-suicide and pro-anorexia content, platforms, and algorithms relentlessly and deliberately infecting feeds; sextortion; child sex abuse material; deepfakes and revenge pornography. These are disproportionately impacting youth, their mental health and wellbeing, and can all be prevented. Young people have the right to be safe online. The Canadian Government has listened to parents and caregivers, those in the youth suicide prevention sector and they have listened to youth who tell us they want to be Free to Be Safe. Just like we need rules for road safety, we need rules for online safety. Get the facts about the Online Harms Act (Bill C-63), and why it's needed. • Here's how to share photos safely for schools, after school activities like gyms, dance clubs, martial arts and anyone that works with children as well as parents. In an age where deepfakes and AI are on the rise, ensuring we keep our children and ourselves safe and minimise the threat of deepfakes without missing out on celebrating those special moments. It's not about avoiding photo sharing; it's about doing it smarter. When acknowledging achievements, creatively use awards or trophies to cover parts of the face in photos. Skip the full-frontal photos. Side or back shots can be just as effective and much safer. Let the activity shine. A photo of hands drawing or a back view of a child engrossed in painting tells a beautiful story without showing a face. In group pictures, position everyone so no one is directly facing the camera, keeping individual faces less identifiable. Use backlighting to silhouette figures, capturing the image without clear facial details. Use avatars or animated characters for a fun, safe representation of a child online. If you must show a face in a photo or a video, a slight blur or up loading in low resolutions to pixelate the image slightly can help. Look for unique angles that naturally hide identifying features, like an overhead view of an art project. Capture moments where the child is not looking directly at the camera, deepfakes still struggle with getting eyes perfect so make it harder by not having direct eye contact. Document the experience, not the faces. A photo of the race's starting line focuses on the event, not who's participating. Use masks or face paints during activities for a playful way to keep faces hidden in photos. Sometimes, the setting says it all. Photograph the scene of the activity to tell your story. If you need to share a photo with faces, edit with stickers or emojis over the face to keep identities safe.

  • OpenAI's bold move to abolish the account requirement for ChatGPT-3.5 significantly eases the path to entry, allowing anyone with an internet connection to engage with this sophisticated AI without the need to sign up or log in. This update strives to democratise the technology, broadening its accessibility to users across the globe and inviting a broader audience to explore its capabilities. Removing account login restrictions is poised to drive innovation and experimentation among diverse demographics and industries. Recognising and understanding these trade-offs is crucial for safely navigating the platform. The rapid evolution of social media platforms should provide insightful lessons applicable to ChatGPT-3.5's recent changes. The explosive growth of social media showcased the profound impact of technology on society, especially among younger users. The emergence of issues such as cyberbullying, privacy breaches, and misinformation proliferation led to a critical reevaluation of platform policies and the introduction of safety measures. It took almost 16 years for various State Departments of Education to even start implementing smartphone bans during school hours. Some schools are still collaborating with us to craft up-to-date and relevant social media policies after receiving advice from those with less experience. Historical lessons from the explosion of social media risk emphasise the importance of deploying up-to-date and relevant policies and education. The absence of an account makes it challenging to enforce age restrictions or parental consent, leaving children and teenagers susceptible to various online threats. We are in a time when expertise in policy development, cybersecurity, and online safety is vital for assisting schools and organisations. We don't have time to wait. Our new “Online Safety Coach” program is available for staff members of schools, businesses, organisations, and those who are working executive/business or college admission coaches. • Follower question - Do you have any info on FIFA 23 app or now called EA sports FC mobile??? When it comes to children engaging with mobile games like EA Sports FC Mobile, parents should be mindful of several potential risks. These risks extend beyond the game itself, touching on broader concerns associated with online activities and digital interactions. Monitoring and managing how much time children spend playing games is essential to encourage a healthy balance between physical activities and rest. Children may need to understand the value of money in the same way adults do, leading to unexpected expenses. Discussing and setting clear boundaries regarding in-app purchases is crucial. Games that feature online multiplayer modes or community interactions open children up to communication with strangers. This can expose them to inappropriate language, bullying, or even grooming by malicious individuals. Utilising parental controls and discussing internet safety can mitigate these risks. Parents should review the game’s data collection policies and adjust privacy settings to protect their children’s information. Recognising signs of game addiction, such as mood changes, withdrawal from social activities, or neglect of responsibilities, is essential. Mitigation Strategies Set Boundaries - Implement rules regarding playtime and breaks to ensure a healthy balance. Educate - Teach children about online safety, the importance of privacy, and the real-world implications of in-app purchases. Use Parental Controls - Leverage built-in parental control features to limit purchases, manage privacy settings, and control online interaction capabilities. Monitor and Communicate - Keep an open line of communication about what your child is experiencing online and encourage them to share any concerns or uncomfortable situations they encounter. Encourage Diverse Interests - Promote a variety of activities beyond video games to ensure a well-rounded development.
