On Tuesday, Transport Minister Catherine King said the government would provide $80 million to keep Rex operating those routes, without detailing whether the money was being treated as a loan or a grant. The funding will keep Rex flying until June, after the next federal election, which is due by May. The decision has angered smaller operators, who described it as a “real kick in the guts” and said they had proposed taking over Rex’s services. “EY will not enter into a discussion with industry as to how to support these regional and remote communities. The government and [Ms King] won’t enter into a discussion with industry either,” Sharp Airlines chief executive Malcolm Sharp told The Australian Financial Review on Tuesday. “The industry can provide solutions at no cost. But now the government’s throwing $80 million at them. I just don’t get it,” he said. “I would love a share of that money, as well as would the rest of the regional aviation industry to support our services, to re-fleet. If EY and the government would sit down with industry, we could provide them with a solution, but they won’t. EY won’t even return our calls.” Hamilton-based Sharp Airlines competes with Rex on routes from Melbourne to King Island and Burnie in Tasmania. “When the minister first came out about this, she didn’t even realise that there were three regional airlines flying to King Island, not just one,” Mr Sharp said. “She said she felt for the King Island community because Rex is the only airline. It just goes to show she doesn’t understand her portfolio.”

The managing director of Sharp Airlines says the scheduled Australian regional carrier is watching what happens with Rex Airlines and its flights to Bass Strait's King Island. His airline is in a "strategic hold" and, with its 14-year history of flying to nearby Flinders Island, is well-placed to take over the King Island services should Rex cease its scheduled Melbourne Tullamarine route. ▶ Full news story available here: https://lnkd.in/dxwfMHcT Photo Credit: Sharp Airlines #chaviation #aviationnews #sharpairlines #rexairlines Alistair Dorward

Given the uncertainty surrounding the future of Regional Express Airlines, the Managing Director of Sharp Airlines has indicated that Sharp Airlines is in a "strategic hold", watching to see what will happen with REX. In any event, Sharp Airlines has acquired additional aircraft and flight crew and is well prepared to fill the gap in providing services to King Island should REX fail. "Monday 30th September saw us commence our summer schedule which increases our services to Melbourne to 9 returns per week. In addition, our weekly frequency between King Island and Burnie/Launceston is 12 returns per week." "We certainly have the capacity to nearly double the frequency to Melbourne should REX exit the market, increasing our current seat offering from 300 to 600 seats per week. This capacity would fully meet the needs of King Island from our experience." "We note that Sharp Airlines has been the sole airline servicing Flinders Island for over 14 years (with up to 18 return services per week). This track record clearly demonstrates Sharp's ability to step up and service King Island in a similar fashion." Having commenced operations 34 years ago, Sharp Airlines now operates 23 Metroliner turboprop aircraft servicing 5 States in the Airline, Charter and FIFO market, and carries over 100,000 passengers and more than 2 million kilograms of freight every year. With Bases in Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Launceston, Melbourne (Essendon) and Perth, Sharp Airlines is continually growing and looking for opportunities. Regional carrier Sharp Airlines says it could double its capacity between Melbourne and Tasmania’s King Island if Rex is unable to meet demand. The airline has commenced its summer schedule, which triples its Melbourne-King Island services to nine per week; it also flies return between King Island and Burnie/Launceston 12 times per week. https://lnkd.in/gtNpwskT
