The Shire is proud to contribute to our healthy local economy, helping to attract further agricultural, fishing, mining, and tourism businesses and industries to contribute towards the region’s $1.27 billion annual GDP. Council and the Shire prioritise key projects, developed to help secure State and Federal Government support for improved education, transport, and amenities to enhance liveability and attract people to the region. These key projects include proposals that come under the roles and responsibilities of local government, as well as those where Council and the Shire work to influence outcomes in the best interest of our community. 

This Australian-first initiative aims to encourage responsible travel behaviour among visitors, ensuring that both the natural environment and local community values are respected.

The 'Esperance. In your element' brand was created to inspire sustainable tourism in the Esperance region. It was designed after extensive collaboration with the people who live, work, play and invest in this part of the world. From many interviews, consultations and workshops, truths emerged about this unique place and the people who call it home. Our goal - To grow the story of Esperance as a destination. As the elements shape Esperance, we're shaping the Esperance brand as a unique, positive, sustainable, and responsible destination for visitors seeking an immersive and authentic experience in nature. Because there is so much more to us than the unbeatable turquoise waters and kangaroos at Lucky Bay. Australia's Golden Outback

The Shire is proud to support off-peak tourism initiatives with seed funding prompted by the Esperance Tourism Strategy – the next of these initiatives is the spectacular inaugural Grounded Hiking Festival, coming to Esperance and surrounds over three days from 20 to 22 September. The hikes during this festival cater to different abilities and interests, with an additional free Unity Hike tailored for participants with special needs or abilities, or as a self-guided experience.

With a strategic vision for growth, the Shire's proactive land development initiatives have been essential in fostering economic expansion and accommodating population growth. The commitment of over five million dollars to Major Capital Projects in the 2022/23 Budget, particularly the Flinders Estate Stage 3 subdivision, is a testament to the council's dedication to the region's future. The availability of new residential and industrial lots, tailored to diverse needs and preferences, ensures that Esperance remains a vibrant and thriving community. As we witness the completion of Flinders Estate Stage 4, it's clear that the Shire's efforts are not just about creating space but about building opportunities for businesses and individuals alike. As we transition into the new budget year, it's an opportune time to revisit the progress of pivotal infrastructure projects that promise to bolster regional connectivity and safety. The Fisheries Road Project stands out as a significant undertaking highlighted in the previous year's budget. This ambitious project aims to widen a 120km stretch of road linking Esperance to Condingup, a move that will not only enhance the driving experience but also elevate safety measures for all road users. Upon completion, the Fisheries Road will boast 120km sealed shoulders and audio tactile line marking—a feature that is expected to drastically reduce the incidence of road accidents. These tactile lines, commonly referred to as rumble strips, serve as an audible warning system that alerts drivers when veering off the lane, thereby preventing potential mishaps. The project is a part of the State Government's Regional Road Safety Program. The Fisheries Road Project is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it's a testament to the community's resolve to create a safer and more connected region for residents and visitors alike. We're thrilled to announce a key milestone in our tourism journey. The Esperance Shire Council's unanimous endorsement of the new tourism brand is a testament to our shared commitment to the 2021 Tourism Strategy. This is more than a brand; it's our story, woven from Esperance's stunning natural wonders and the vibrant spirit of our community. Together with Australia's Golden Outback and The Brand Agency, we're crafting a narrative that captures the heart of our region.

The Shire of Esperance has adopted the new Extractive Industries Local Law 2024. The purpose of the Extractive Industries Local Law is to: - Prohibit the carrying on of an extractive industry unless by authority of a license issued by the local government; - Regulate the carrying on of the extractive industry in order to minimize damage to the environment, roads and other peoples’ health and property; and - Provide for the restoration and reinstatement of any excavation site. The effect of the Extractive Industries Local Law is to ensure any person wanting to carry on an extractive industry is licensed and complies with the provisions of the local law. The Shire of Esperance successfully received $353,000 from the State Government Mitigation Activity Fund, allowing the us to engage contractors and volunteers to implement our Bushfire Risk Management Plan. In its third year of implementing the Bushfire Risk Management Plan, the Shire of Esperance will undertake prescribed burns once conditions permit.
