As a dynamic energy company, our growing portfolio is underpinning Australia’s transition to renewable energy future.

About us

Snowy Hydro is a dynamic and growing integrated energy business that supplies electricity to more than one million homes and businesses. The Snowy Hydro Group includes our generation business and three retail companies: Red Energy, Lumo Energy and Direct Connect. Our role is to provide national energy security, help with the transition to a new era of renewables, and maintain healthy competition in the retail energy markets. Our retail companies put customers first and continue to be recognised as leaders in customer service and support. Our story began in 1949 with the construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which included nine power stations, 16 major dams, 80 kilometres of aqueducts and 145 kilometres of interconnected tunnels. Today we have a generation capacity of 5,500MW, including our gas-fired and diesel-fired assets, and are the fourth-largest retailer in the energy market. Snowy Hydro is well underway with the construction of the Snowy 2.0 pumped-hydro project, which will add 2,000MW of generation and 175 hours of storage to the energy market. As leaders in renewable energy we have also signed contracts for more than 1,000MW of renewable generation from 10 wind and solar projects. These are exciting additions to our energy portfolio that will help underpin energy security and Australia’s renewable energy future. Snowy Hydro has been incorporated under the Corporations Act (Cth) 2001 since 2002, and is governed by an independent Board of Directors. For more than 70 years, Snowy has been a proud member and supporter of the communities in which we live and work. We make a significant contribution to the local economy through jobs, investment and business opportunities.

A unique privilege to share our work! One of the most rewarding aspects of working at Snowy Hydro is seeing how much our community values what we do and where we do it. Our recent open day at Tumut 3 Power Station in Talbingo was a perfect example of this. The excitement and interest from over 680 attendees remind us just how special it is to work at a place people are eager to see behind the scenes. With local community members and visitors exploring the largest pumped-hydro facility in Australia, we’re reminded of the pride surrounding Snowy Hydro’s engineering marvels and legacy. The opportunity to share our operations, critical energy supply role, and engineering, reinforces why we’re so lucky to be part of this story. Connecting with our community and showcasing the incredible work happening here is not only a celebration of what we do but a reminder of how privileged we are to be part of something people want to experience firsthand. #snowyhydro #ourproudhistory #celebrating75years #community #powerstation #communityopenday #snowyscheme

Marica milestone! We've reached the halfway point excavating the giant surge shaft that will provide water storage when the Snowy 2.0 power station starts up and pressure relief in the 10-metre diameter headrace tunnel when it shuts down. The 28-metre-wide shaft is now more than 124 metres deep! When completed it will be one of the largest, deepest operational shafts in the world. #snowy2 #construction #tunnelling #powerstation #projectupdate

Snowy Hydro proudly supported and attended the Giiyong Festival on Yuin Nation Lands over the weekend. Organised by Twofold Aboriginal Corporation, Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council, and South East Arts, the festival is a unique opportunity for Aboriginal and broader communities to share in music, dance, workshops and traditional practices. Snowy Hydro joined the festival with a stall hosted by our Snowy STEM Academy team, welcoming people eager to learn more about our operations, partnerships and First Nations engagement initiatives. Our team had the chance to deepen connections with the South Coast community, introducing our partnerships with the Clontarf and Stars Foundations and sharing activities and pathways for young people. It was a fantastic event and a great experience to immerse ourselves in culture, learning by experiencing the powerful history and stories of the Yuin people firsthand. 🖤 ❤️ 💛 #snowyhydro #community #connection #GiiyongFestival

Last week, we celebrated International Control Room Week, a time to recognise the important teams powering operations worldwide. At Snowy Hydro, the control room teams truly play a critical role in our operations and keeping the lights on. Since the first power generation at Guthega in 1955, our control systems have evolved to meet the needs of a growing portfolio and a rapidly changing energy market. In 1966, the Snowy System Control Centre was established to oversee the complex coordination of our assets. Today, our skilled Generation Operations team, based in the Snowy Mountains. The control room operates 24/7, 365 (sometimes 366) days a year. The team monitors, controls and dispatches Snowy Hydro’s hydro, gas, and diesel assets in NSW, Victoria and South Australia. From real-time monitoring and load balancing to coordinating maintenance, overhauls and capital projects, this team ensures that our assets are resilient and ready to power the National Electricity Market with the push of a button. They manage critical data every second, integrating new assets with precision and agility. With advancements in technology, the team is ready to integrate projects like Hunter Power Station and Snowy 2.0 seamlessly. #snowyhydro #internationalcontrolroomweek #behindthescenes #peoplepower #renewables

We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us and dreamed big 💧⚒️ What an unforgettable day! We recently celebrated 75 years of the Snowy Scheme with over 350 former workers and their families, honouring their remarkable contributions to one of the greatest engineering marvels in history. Your guts, grit, and determination have left a legacy that we all take pride in. The day was all about reconnecting and sharing the memories that have shaped the Snowy Scheme over the decades, as well as the significant contributions made to the local region and also to the nation. As we look to the future, the next 75 years will be just as critical to building a renewable energy future. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating this milestone. #snowyhydro #75years #75yearsofsnowyhydro #reunionevent #formerworkers #ourproudhistory

💫 Rising up together 💫 Recently, a group of our women leaders attended a workshop as part of Snowy Hydro's Rise: Women in Leadership Program. Now in its second year, the program supports our commitment to championing internal talent and is delivered in partnership with McCarthy Mentoring. The second of the three workshops was held at Red Energy’s iconic Richmond workspace. The sessions focused on effective communication, including presentation skills theory and practice hosted by former journalist Theresa Miller, applying communication skills, and stepping outside of comfort zones to tackle an innovative business challenge. “The value of the Rise program goes far beyond the practical skills we learn. It’s about increasing connections with like-minded and ambitious people in our diverse business and making the most of opportunities to extend ourselves, so we can make a difference.” - Heather Quinlan. Rise will enable, develop, and accelerate 21 of Snowy Hydro’s women into senior leadership roles across the business. Designed to help strengthen leadership capability in a complex environment, Rise focuses on building self-awareness, skills, and networks while gaining a strategic perspective on role and organisational priorities. #leadership #leadershipprogram #development #femaleleaders #networking #womeninleadership

This morning, our Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre in Cooma was a hive of activity. ABC South East joined us for a live radio broadcast as we mark 75 incredible years of the Snowy Scheme. Attendees enjoyed a BBQ breakfast provided by the Cooma Lions Club. Local school students participated in some fun and educational activities led by the Snowy STEM Academy. We were lucky to host a display of artwork from Lambie Street Preschool students, who received a grant through our 75th Anniversary Grants Program. Their creative pieces celebrated Snowy Hydro’s story, showcasing the next generation’s creative talent. It was wonderful to hear the heartfelt stories of local residents. These personal reflections revealed the deep impact the Snowy Scheme has had on the Snowy Mountains region, from the early construction days to today’s role as a driver of renewables, career opportunities and regional development. #snowyhydro #snowyscheme #ABCSouthEast #livebroadcast #radiobroadcast #community #75yearsofthesnowyscheme
