We'd like to share Ian Dadour's latest contribution to published work on traumatic sheep myiasis alongside longtime research collaborators Tharindu Bambaradeniya, Murdoch University and Dr Paola A. Magni. This publication was featured in the Journal of Medical Entomology Oxford University Press. It builds on the group's previous review in Veterinary Parasitology Elsevier (https://lnkd.in/g6MmYF2v) and offers a comprehensive look at survey methods in this field. This review attempts to optimise the design and integration of the current survey methods and proposes recommendations to support farmers and researchers. At Source Certain, we enhance our scientific capabilities by bringing on board highly skilled academics and scientists from diverse disciplines. Today, we are excited to share the latest article by renowned forensic entomologist Professor Ian Dadour, who heads the Research and Education department at Source Certain. Ian's research on rhinoceros poaching is making significant strides in the field of wildlife poaching prosecution. His collaborative research with the South African Police Service and Murdoch University has established precise methods for estimating the time since death for rhinoceroses. Law enforcement and officials have already utilised this information to build cases against suspected poachers. This has far-reaching implications for forensic entomology and forensic wildlife science, underscoring the potential for enhancing the global understanding of procedures related to wildlife criminal cases. This more recent scientific development, combined with the continued efforts of ranger teams and satellite tracking, has contributed significantly to the recovery of rhinoceros populations in the Republic of South Africa over the past 30 years. #wildlifeprotection #wildlifeconservation #wildlifescience #veterinaryscience #forensicscience https://lnkd.in/g6kCjcRg
Great news! our rhinoceros poaching manuscript has just been published in #Medical #Veterinary #Entomology. Three years in the making and a fantastic collaboration between myself at Source Certain/ Murdoch University and Captain Melanie Pienaar of the South African Police Service. By analyzing insects colonizing decomposing carcasses on 19 poached rhinoceros between 2014 and 2021 we were able to to estimate their time since death . This information has been used by investigators and officials to construct cases against suspected perpetrators. This has major implications across both the science of forensic entomology and forensic wildlife, and especially highlights the opportunities for improving the global understanding of the procedures related to wildlife criminal cases. This one small facet of science combined with ranger teams and satellite tracking has led to a rebound in rhinoceros populations in the Republic of South Africa over the last 30 years. #MelaniePienaar https://lnkd.in/gV7pfkNp
