Updates

  • As someone who is still young, healthy and active, Craig didn’t expect anything to happen when he joined a running festival this year. But not long after crossing the finish line, Craig collapsed and went into cardiac arrest - his skin even turning blue. Luckily, he was in capable hands as St John volunteers rushed to his side, providing critical, lifesaving aid. • Congratulations to St John volunteer and medical student, Usha Makkena, who was named 2024 NSW Young Volunteer of the Year at the Centre for Volunteering Awards today. Usha has been a volunteer for six years with St John, providing first aid and medical care at events and during times of emergencies - including the 2020 bushfires and 2022 floods. She also mentors and trains other young volunteers, and works with our Youth Peer Support Team. Well done Usha and all other St John volunteer finalists who attended today's award ceremony!

  • This weekend marked the beginning of an eventful summer with Sydney’s iconic event location Carraigeworks. St John Ambulance NSW is proud to be providing Major Event Medical Services at Summer Sounds, ensuring the highest level of patient safety across all five nights of live performances. Providing the event space with an onsite Medical Centre, this area includes resuscitation, acute and sub-acute bays, additional to a dedicated triage area. With a strong commitment to advanced care capabilities, we've invested in state-of-the-art medical resources, including acute bedside monitoring trolleys for each bay, allowing patients to receive full continuous cardiac and vital signs monitoring. The trolleys also allow clinicians to work bedside with quick access to emergency equipment and other commonly required resources. Our highly trained team of Registered Health Professionals and experienced Event Responders are ready to deliver comprehensive care of any acuity level, offering peace of mind for eventgoers and organisers alike. • "You might see how to perform CPR in a documentary or in a demonstration. But it's quite different when you're seeing it done on someone that you know and care about." Johnny witnessed first-hand the lifesaving work of St John volunteers who worked tirelessly to save his friend’s life at a running event this year. • This International Volunteer Day, we honour the invaluable contributions of volunteers in Australia and around the world, because every act of service counts. Our volunteers have made a commitment to the community, ensuring the sight of greens provides a sense of security at events across the state. Whether this looks like rendering first aid, holding a hand in distress and delivering medical services that saves lives. This year alone, over 3,000 St John NSW volunteers have dedicated over 200,000 hours and treated over 9,000 patients across the state. We thank you for your service. Every act of service counts.

  • Rushing to help a runner who was unconscious and no longer breathing, there was no better team to provide the lifesaving care that was necessary to help the patient survive. Victoria was one of the St John volunteers who arrived on scene, bringing a defibrillator, first aid kit, and oxygen resuscitation kit when it was needed most. As a charity, we depend on your support to keep volunteers like Victoria in your local community. With your help, they can continue doing their lifesaving work and keeping you safe. • This morning, we had the privilege to have The Hon. Ryan Park MP, Minister for Health, Minister for Regional Health, join Dominic, VIP guests, and staff to officially open the new St John Ambulance NSW headquarters in Macquarie Park. The ceremony began with Uncle Raymond Weatherall, representing the Local Aboriginal Land Council (MLAL), leading a special smoking ceremony to celebrate the special occasion. As we begin this exciting new chapter in Macquarie Park, St John member Simone, alongside The Hon Ryan Park MP, CEO Dominic, Chair of the Board of Directors Sean, and Communications Team Lead Kerrie, proudly announced the launch of the new Macquarie Park Division, which Simone will be leading. This marks a fantastic opportunity for local adults and cadets to join our mission and serve the Australian community by being #readytorespond.
