Offshore wind turbine technology has advanced over the years to be more efficient, reliable, cost-effective and sustainable than ever before. Back in 2000, a typical offshore wind turbine had a 2 MW capacity. Today, 14 MW turbines are being installed. And 20 MW turbines are being designed for the future. This means fewer turbines, with a reduced footprint on the seabed, producing more and cheaper electricity.

Australia's most advanced offshore wind project.
About us
The Star of the South is Australia's most advanced offshore wind project, proposed off the coast of Gippsland in Victoria. If developed to its full potential Star of the South would provide up to around 20% of Victoria’s energy requirements while creating jobs and investing in the local economy. The project is currently in the feasibility stage. The Star of the South is being progressed by local Australian developers, along with expert offshore wind partners, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Copenhagen Offshore Partners. Our goal is to secure Australia's long-term energy needs in an environmentally-friendly and sustainable way. Rules of engagement: We welcome your feedback and participation on this page. Atoll Offshore has provided vessel and subsea services locally and interstate for more than 12 years 👏 The Lakes Entrance based company has a fleet of aluminium vessels for a variety of offshore works including transferring supplies, diver and Remotely Operated Vehicle support, construction, and research. We used one of these vessels - the 'Silver Star' - to map the seafloor in the Star of the South area in 2020. John from Atoll Offshore recently gave us a tour of the 'Starcat', a former fishing boat now used for survey work across Australia. "We are eagerly anticipating Star of the South’s development and are excited for the opportunities offshore wind will bring local businesses”, he said. You can find Atoll Offshore listed on page 45 of the Offshore Wind Supplier Showcase 👉 https://lnkd.in/gHnrdvdh

With offshore wind energy being new to Australia, it can be hard to imagine what projects will look like. That's why we created a digital model of Star of the South. You can use this tool to see how the project could look from coastal towns, explore the proposed wind farm, learn about turbine technology and provide feedback. Check out the online version here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gMPG3TVJ Or visit our Gippsland office during opening hours to interact with it on a big screen and speak with our team.

The top (white) sections of an offshore wind turbine - the tower, blades and nacelle - can all be installed within a 24 hour window if the conditions at sea are right 😮 It takes years of planning to ensure this work runs smoothly and safely. We’ve teamed up again with other Gippsland offshore wind projects to host more ‘Gippsland Offshore Wind Days’. Across four days we’ll be talking with locals about offshore wind, sharing project information and listening to ideas and feedback to help shape Star of the South. VicGrid and Offshore Wind Energy Victoria will also be there to discuss Victoria’s transmission and energy plans. 👉 https://lnkd.in/g_Q8_cf

Offshore wind turbines are made from around 90% recyclable materials like steel, copper and aluminium ♻ Solutions for the remaining 10% - including recyclable turbine blades and new recycling techniques - are being trialed on a commercial scale, with manufacturers committed to zero waste turbines before 2040. #OffshoreWind #turbines #recyclable #ZeroWaste

Guided by science 🔍 Working with leading scientists and research agencies from Australia and around the world, we completed one of the biggest ever marine environment survey programs in Bass Strait between 2000-2024. Data collected is now guiding the planning and design of Star of the South, while also building scientific understanding of the little studied Bass Strait marine environment. Offshore wind is one of the fastest growing energy technologies worldwide. More than 300 offshore wind projects are already operating in 20 countries across Europe, the US and Asia - with a further 15 countries either developing or constructing projects right now, including Australia. The number of offshore wind farms worldwide will continue to grow as nations look to add capacity, boost energy security, and reduce emissions. #OffshoreWind #DidyouKnow #Energy #RenewableEnergy
