Steve Waugh Foundation
Non-profit Organizations
The only stand-alone Foundation of its kind in Australia supporting children and young adults with Rare Diseases.
About us
The Steve Waugh Foundation is ‘somewhere to turn’ for children and young adults with Rare Diseases. Often without diagnosis, without treatment, and therefore, without reason to hope, the Rare Disease patient is the orphan of the health system. We strive to change this. We take a holistic approach in supporting children and young adults (0-25yrs) with the rarest diseases. We work to improve their quality of life by providing support and opportunities to connect with others through: Individual Grants: funding for children and young adults (0-25yrs) such as specialised equipment and treatment therapies Respite Camps: specially designed retreats to support families caring for a child or young person with a Rare Disease (SNUG) Raising Awareness: playing a lead role in sponsoring a coordinated approach to the promotion of World Rare Disease Day in Australia since 2009

We think our rare stars are pretty special, and Grant Recipient Madison is showing us why. Although Madison has been through a lot, she is ray of sunshine to those around her. A rare bleeding disorder means Madison is in and out of hospitals and doctors’ appointments. She doesn’t let this get in the way of her caring nature, making sure other sick kids also have a reason to smile. This is what ‘Strength of Character’ look like. “This was made possible by you. Thank you.” Grant Recipient Liam loves supercars. Over the weekend, Liam was able to attend the Bathurst 1000 thanks to the wheelchair the Steve Waugh Foundation provided. The added bonus… our long-term, generous and passionate supporter, Betty Klimenko of Erebus Motorsport, took out top spot! Betty and Liam have known each other for years, with Betty going out of her way to spend time with Liam and welcome him into her team. The two first meet at a supercar event when Liam was just a toddler and have had a special connection ever since. #stevewaughfoundation #grants #somewheretoturn #bathurst1000 #rarediseases #supporters

The Renee Series of homes, named after SWF Ambassador Renee Eliades, is a project close to our hearts and we are excited to announce the 7th home in the series is officially underway! More than 50 suppliers and trades have generously jumped on board this incredible project, with all profits from the sale of the home go directly to the Steve Waugh Foundation. Thank you to everyone involved! #stevewaughfoundation #avjennings #somewheretoturn #communitymatters #strengthofcharacter
Breaking Ground on the Renee 7. Construction has officially begun on the 7th home in our Renee Series at our Rosella Rise community in NSW. Proceeds from the sale of this home will go directly to the Steve Waugh Foundation, supporting children with rare diseases. This home, designed with Liveable Housing guidelines for enhanced accessibility, is part of our Stellar Collection and features the innovative Pro9 walling system, double-glazed windows, and will achieve an impressive 8.7-star NatHERS rating. This project wouldn’t be possible without the contributions of more than 50 valued suppliers. We’re excited to be underway and look forward to seeing the Renee 7 take shape. #avjennings #communitymatters #somewheretoturn

As Chairman, Patron, volunteer and advocate for our rare stars, Bob Mansfield AO has dedicated the last 20 years to the Steve Waugh Foundation. Bob’s guidance, mentorship and commitment to the Foundation has ensured its strength and success spanning more than two decades. At our recent Board Meeting, Bob announced his retirement as Chairman – leading the way for current volunteer EO and Board Member, Kevin Wright, to take on the role. Bob has been invaluable to the inception and direction of the Foundation – without his guidance, the Foundation would not be the success it is today and as we move into the future. We thank Bob for his conscientious work and dedication, not only as our Chairman, but as a mentor and friend. We wish Bob all the very best for the next chapter and pass on our sincere gratitude for his 20 years of support. #stevewaughfoundation #somewheretoturn #strengthofcharacter

⭐ Steve Waugh Foundation Rare Stars shine bright at the Paralympics ⭐ Two Steve Waugh Foundation Grant Recipients are representing Australia at the Paris Paralympics. To say we are proud is an understatement! ✨ Grant Recipient, Callum Simpson, is a passionate swimmer from Queensland. We have funded multiple Grants for Callum since 2019 - grants which included, speech therapy, a specialised board for Nippers, and hydrotherapy. ⚪ The hydrotherapy and swimming made a huge impact on Callum's strength, muscle tone and co-ordination, which are impacted by his 1 in a million rare disease. 🥇 In Paris, at his first Paralympic Games, 17 year old Callum won gold! Callum was an integral part of the Mixed Medley Relay, claiming gold and a Paralympic record! ⚪ Callum made it to the finals of the Mens 400m Freestyle where he placed 6th. He still has the 100m Freestyle to go! ✨ Grant Recipient, Daniel Michel, has been a part of the Foundation since 2012 when we first funded a Robotic Arm for him. Since then, we have provided Dan with multiple Grants and support, with Steve and Lynette keeping in regular contact and attending many Boccia games to cheer him on. 🥈 In Paris Dan won Silver in the Boccia BC3 Individual event, going one better than his Bronze in Tokyo! ⚪ Dan and Team Australia made it to the Quarter Finals of the Boccia BC3 mixed pairs, it was a tough match, and we are incredibly proud of how far the team made it. 📷 Australian Paralympic Team

As the 2024 Olympic Games kick off in Paris tonight, we’re looking back on some of the Olympic and Paralympic legends who support the Steve Waugh Foundation. Throughout our Captain’s Ride events, we were lucky enough to be joined by some of our most celebrated Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Our Captain’s Ride Ambassadors inspired our team both on and off the bike with their leadership and ‘strength of character’. Their passion for putting rare diseases on the map remains strong to this day. #stevewaughfoundation #thecaptainsride #paris2024 #olympics #paralympics #rarediseases #strengthofcharacter
