In Melbourne, we're lucky to share our beautiful rivers and creeks with our native wildlife, including the iconic platypus. However, with climate change and more people wanting to call Melbourne home, their numbers are declining. It’s more important than ever, to understand where platypus are present. That's why a Melbourne Water-led program has sampled water at 1800 locations across our city's creeks and waterways. The sampling detects traces of platypus DNA shed into the environment from mucus, urine, faeces, skin and saliva 🧬. The program has uncovered that platypus are present in dozens of creeks and rivers throughout Greater Melbourne! Melbourne researcher Dr Rhys Colemen said “It may surprise many Melburnians to learn that there is platypus in their local creeks and rivers.” “Climate change and increasing urbanisation are impacting platypus habitats, and we must seize every opportunity to protect our precious waterways to stabilise their numbers,” he said. Together with data collected via ‘capture and release’ and sightings, we're able to get a comprehensive picture of platypus populations in Melbourne.
