  • International Men’s Day Today, we celebrate the positive contributions of the men in our lives – as fathers, brothers, partners, friends and role models. International Men’s Day is celebrated in over 80 countries and not only celebrates the positive value men bring to their families and communities but aims to raise awareness for men’s wellbeing and health issues. This year’s theme is “Men’s Health Champions”. This theme focuses on improving on men and boy’s health, which is one of the six key objectives of International Men’s Day. International Men’s Day reminds us to support men’s mental and physical health, promote positive masculinity, and work towards a world where men feel safe, valued, and connected. Let's break the stigma around men seeking support and recognize the importance of self-care and well-being for all.

  • Perinatal Mental Health Week 💛 Created by Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia in 2005, Perinatal Mental Health Week aims to educate the community and health professionals in understanding perinatal mental health. Perinatal Mental Health Week highlights the mental health challenges that parents can face during this significant time of transition. This week also emphasises the importance of early intervention, community support and adequate health services to help parents manage any mental health concerns. Together, we can build supportive communities and mental health resources tailored to the unique challenges of the perinatal period, ensuring parents receive the care they need.

  • 4 Things You Can Do To Build Trust With Children Who Have Experienced Trauma When working with children who have experienced trauma, one of the most important things to consider is building trust and creating a safe space for them. Children who have experienced trauma can struggle to trust people, and it is important to remember that building trust takes time, patience and consistency. 🌻 Create predictability: Many experiences of trauma involve levels of unpredictability. For children with trauma, sudden changes in routines, unplanned events occurring or transitions between activities, can be very triggering. What you can do:  - Create visual routines that outline what they will be doing throughout the day, or in the classroom - Give warnings before transitions - Explain what will happen next 🌻 Create Consistency: Establish clear, consistent rules that are explained in a calm, supportive manner. These should be simple, such as "We take turns," or "We use quiet voices inside." Be consistent in how you enforce rules and consequences. If the child knows what to expect when a rule is followed or broken, they feel more in control of their environment. 🌻 Create psychological safety: Foster open and honest communication with the child. Remind them that you are there to support them, but do not make promises you may not be able to keep. Listen to the child attentively without interrupting. Acknowledge their emotions and experiences. Reflect back on what you hear to show you understand. Conversation ideas: - Regular check ins - What makes the child feel happy/safe - One good thing and one bad thing about the child’s day 🌻 Allow choice and control: Many children who have experienced trauma feel like they do not have control over their lives, and many have had choices taken away from them. What you can do: - When participating in an activity, give the child two or three choices about which activity they do. Too many options can be overwhelming, so two or three is much easier. - Offering choices during transitions can make the transition less anxiety inducing for the child. This can be as simple as, “We’ll be cleaning up soon. Do you want to put away the toys now or in five minutes?”
