We're shaping Victoria's circular economy, ensuring we reduce or stop waste before it starts.
About us
Sustainability Victoria supports Victorians in being more sustainable in their everyday lives: in our homes and workplaces, in our schools and communities, and in the systems and infrastructure that underpin a thriving Victorian economy and lifestyle. We are shaping Victoria's circular economy on behalf of the state government, to build the most sustainable future for Victorians. We want to improve the way Victoria manages its resources and help communities to take action on climate change and reduce or stop waste before it starts. Start the New Year with a commitment to sustainability. Even small changes can make a big impact. One easy step is ensuring your household recycling habits are on point 🎯 Waste and recycling services can change and sometimes differ between local councils. By making sure the right items go in the right bin, you can help recover and reuse more valuable resources, so less ends up in landfill – and more of your recycling can be turned into new things. Check the waste and recycling information for your area, so you know what can go into your bins: https://lnkd.in/gqpnzM4h

We all know reducing waste and tackling overconsumption are critical for a sustainable future, but telling people to “just do it” isn’t the answer. Behaviour change is a complex process, and research shows that judgmental or patronising messaging often backfires. So, how do we shift habits? ☝️ Avoid finger wagging – Instead of scolding, focus on explaining why and how a new behaviour is better. 🎯 Be specific – Want less waste? Suggest actions like buying second-hand or repairing instead of general messaging to “consume less”. 🚀 Show momentum – Share examples of others adopting sustainable habits to create a ripple effect. At the recent Waste Expo, our experts explained how using research-backed behaviour change techniques can make a big difference. Let’s ditch the wagging finger and inspire change with carrots, not sticks. Check out the full guide: https://bit.ly/4gDbPqt

Sweet Dreams Are Made of Recycled Plastic! A sustainable night’s sleep is now a reality with Circular Beds, Australia’s first bed base made entirely from 100% recycled plastic! Why it matters: 🚮 Repurposing recycling: Each king single bed base contains about 22kg of recycled consumer plastic from milk crates, garden pots, storage containers, and buckets. ♻️ Circular Design: Fully recyclable at the end of its life, these bed bases are durable, mould-resistant, and easy to clean—perfect for high-turnover environments. 🌎 Eco-Friendly Innovation: Replacing traditional materials like low-grade timber with locally sourced recycled plastic avoids virgin material use and reduces landfill waste. The idea for this project became a reality thanks to collaboration between the Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC), Robovoid Pty Ltd, Swinburne University of Technology University, and GT Recycling Pty Ltd. Sustainability Victoria was proud to support this project with $400,000 in grants, on behalf of the Victorian Government. It’s just one example of how we’re accelerating new markets for recycled materials. Trials are already underway in student accommodation, social housing, and First Nations communities, with Social Living leading the charge on circular economy principles to reduce waste and create jobs in marginalised communities.
