Josh Gilbert, a Worimi man, Sustainable Table advisor, and leading advocate for Indigenous representation in agriculture, redefines what Indigenous agriculture truly means. “A true involvement of First Nations people in agriculture impinges upon the self-determined activities of contribution, challenging the colonisation of an industry that actively sought our exclusion.” True involvement means moving beyond assumptions, token gestures, or borrowed narratives. It requires actively supporting Indigenous leadership, acknowledging their knowledge systems, and creating space for First Nations people to lead, define, and shape their role in agriculture on their terms. Earlier this month, we attendedGROUNDEDin Tasmania. Sustainable Table sponsored Angela Clifford fromEat New Zealandto share insights from across the Tasman, fostering community and collaboration between our regions. The event was a great platform for industry to come together for deep discussion and learning. With four consecutive talks running at once throughout the two days, there were wide ranging discussions from nutrient dense food, the latest developments in biochar, grain trials and grazing demonstrations, pathways to market, and more. Highlights for the Sustainable Table team included: Jack Pascoe and Jason Smith discussing Indigenous wisdom around cool burning practices and understanding seasons; Jim Phillipson, Tanya Massy, and Josh Gilbert reflecting on the challenges of succession in farming families; and Felice Jacka on the relationship between agriculture, food and mental health. Recordings of the event will be publicly available soon from the GROUNDED team. Swipe through to check out some highlights. #FoodSystems #RegenerativeFarming #Collaboration #SustainableFood

Last week, Matt Newell hosted a mini-symposium to bring together key stakeholders and spark discussions on how Mountain Rye could transform Australian agriculture. In collaboration with Ridgehaven Pole Dorsets Farm, Matt and his team have set up a demonstration site to trial ‘Mountain Rye’—a promising perennial grain that paves a more sustainable path forward. By cultivating perennial grains, Matt’s team aims to rebuild healthy soils, develop resilient crops, and reduce the environmental impact of traditional farming. Sustainable Table is proud to have supported this project through the Good Grain initiative. 🎧 Want to hear the full story?
