Cybercrime has become the poster child of operational disruptions in the last few years. In 2022-23 over 94,000 incidents were reported, an increase of 23% on the previous period (cyber.gov.au), but non-cyber technology incidents still account for significant down-time in Australia. For our next Staff Spotlight, we get to know Terra Firma Business Consulting’s own Talent Acquisition Team Lead, Darren Taylor. Darren joined Terra Firma at an interesting time, during Covid and whilst Melbourne was experiencing many and extended lockdowns. We are now thrilled to see Darren celebrating three years with us next month and are very grateful for all of the ‘Talent’ he has attracted into the business over that time. He's what Darren had to say about his role and time at Terra Firma. What did you do before you joined TF? I had been in agency recruitment for many years including running my own IT recruitment company for 15 years. I joined Terra Firma in mid-2021. How would you describe your journey at TF? Interesting. When I joined it was my first internal talent acquisition role and for the first 6 months or so I had only been in the office for 2 days due to Covid and Melbourne lockdowns so learning about the business and our people within it was challenging. The market has also changed a couple of times while I have been here, so it means we always need to be open to changing our approach as required. What has been your greatest accomplishment whilst working at TF? This is not mine as such but the TA team in general, is helping to grow our permanent staff numbers between 2021 and late 2023 in what has been one of the most challenging environments to hire people that I have seen. What makes you passionate about your job? I love talking to people about their career journey and what they are looking to do and then assisting them achieve their career goals. What is the best piece of advice have you received in your career? Wow there is lots. I was lucky enough to be taught and mentored by someone who took the time to teach and coach me early in my career and help to embed a service-oriented culture into my approach. We are in the people business – our job is to help people, so never forget that. What is your number one tip for candidates interviewing for a new role? It can be a little difficult at the moment, but the number one tip is to be yourself. The company/ hiring manager is looking to hire you – a person. They know you are not perfect but they do want to know that you are authentic. #culture #authentic #talent
