🔬NEW RESEARCH👇| Lowering the screening start age to 45 or 40 could reduce colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality by 5% and 10%, respectively. Meanwhile, extending the stop age to 79 or 85 could lead to a 3% and 5% reduction. 🔍The findings suggest that starting earlier is more cost-effective and offers a better balance of benefits vs. harms than extending the stop age. 📰Read the full article via Elsevier🔗 https://lnkd.in/gMB7xw-U ✍️Jie Bin Lew | Qingwei Luo | Eleonora Feletto | Joachim Worthington | Karen Canfell AC FAHMS | Cancer Council Australia 📍Cancer Council NSW | Medicine and Health - University of Sydney #⃣ #ColorectalCancer #CancerScreening #PublicHealth

About us
The Daffodil Centre is a joint venture between Cancer Council NSW and the University of Sydney, combining the complementary strengths of the two partners to accelerate progress towards our common goal of a cancer-free future. The Daffodil Centre is a leading research centre on cancer control and policy – providing timely and relevant evidence to national and international policy-makers to inform best-practice decision-making in cancer control. We are focused on reducing the incidence, morbidity and mortality associated with cancer and on improving the quality of life of people with a cancer diagnosis.

🔬NEW RESEARCH👇| The recalibrated Policy1-Bowel model captures significant additional detail on the future incidence and mortality burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Australia. 🔍As younger cohorts with rising CRC rates near screening age, this model supports informed decision-making. Its metamodeling approach enables rapid recalibration and regular updates to integrate new evidence. 📰Read the full article via Sage journal🔗 https://lnkd.in/gbhHn5Tj ✍️Jie Bin Lew | Qingwei Luo | Julia Steinberg | Eleonora Feletto | Karen Canfell AC FAHMS | Joachim Worthington | Michael Caruana | Dianne O'Connell | Emily He 📍Cancer Council NSW | Medicine and Health - University of Sydney #⃣ #ColorectalCancer #CancerResearch #Screening #HealthPolicy #Epidemiology #PublicHealth #CancerPrevention

My colleagues at The Daffodil Centre and I have recently published two new papers on colorectal cancer screening modelling estimates in Australia. The first paper, led by Dr Qingwei Luo, Dr Jie Bin Lew, A/Prof Eleonora Feletto and Prof Karen Canfell AC FAHMS, describes our work to recalibrate the Policy1-Bowel model to improve estimates, capturing detailed colorectal cancer trends in people under 50. https://lnkd.in/ggjHuQEA The second paper, led by Dr Jie Bin Lew, Prof Karen Canfell AC FAHMS, Prof Tim Price and myself, applies this recalibrated model to generate new estimates of the impact of colorectal cancer screening in Australia. This paper reports modelling estimates we generated for the updated 2023 colorectal cancer screening guidelines, evaluating potential extensions of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program to include different age groups. These guidelines informed the Department of Health and Aged Care's decision to extend screening to people aged 45 and up, meaning more Australians than ever are eligible for life-saving cancer screening. https://lnkd.in/g4BY87xW Han Ge, Emily He, Julia Steinberg, Michael Caruana, Dianne O'Connell

Stigma around lung cancer and tobacco smoking is pervasive and prevents health-seeking behaviour. In our new paper, Dr Shiho Rose examines evidence gaps in combatting health-related stigma and argues that Australia's imminent National Lung Cancer Screening Program provides an opportunity and an imperative to challenge the public rhetoric around smoking as a 'choice'. Smoking is an addiction. Cigarettes have been engineered and marketed by industry, intended to addict people to lifelong use. Most people who will be eligible for screening this year started smoking during adolescence or even childhood, at a time when it was socially accepted. No one deserves lung cancer, but everyone deserves quality care and support. https://lnkd.in/gdfSNvFj The Daffodil Centre Katie M. Nathan Harrison Rachael Dodd Shakira O.
