Focus on Maths is AAMT's funding program that supports disadvantaged schools. Our grants fund locally-tailored professional learning initiatives that strengthen maths teaching capacity. Over the next few weeks, we will feature case studies from 2024 Focus on Maths schools, showcasing the impact of these grants, to encourage schools to apply for our latest funding round. Applications close on 30 March 2025. This is a valuable opportunity to enhance maths teaching at your school, so don’t miss out, visit our website today: https://lnkd.in/gfCVWxZt. Case study #1 - Support for remote schools One remote primary school in the NT faced significant challenges in maths education, including high teacher turnover, limited access to resources, geographic isolation and language barriers that hindered student learning. AAMT worked closely with the school to develop their Focus on Maths project and helped the Year 5-6 teacher develop a numeracy strategy tailored to its unique context: 🔸 Building the capacity of local Aboriginal educators in maths teaching practices to support classroom instruction more effectively. 🔸 Developing culturally responsive maths activities and strengthening connections between students and Elders. As a result, students became more engaged in their learning and educators felt more confident in their practice. If you are in a regional or remote school and could benefit from targeted maths professional learning support, apply for a Focus on Maths grant before the end of the month. 🔗 Find out more and access the online application form at https://lnkd.in/gfCVWxZt #mathseducation #mathsedau #Culturallyresponsiveteaching

Last week, we explored the three key practices for effective mathematics teaching from our position paper Pedagogy in Mathematics: https://lnkd.in/gFkkFRpw. Today, we turn to the Framework for Action, which highlights steps leaders can take to create the conditions to promote high-quality mathematics teaching in their schools. These recommendations aim to support teachers in developing a flexible and responsive approach to mathematics teaching, whilst respecting and enhancing their professional judgement. Five areas are addressed: ▪️ Selecting strategies – creating a culture that supports and equips teachers to use a variety of teaching approaches ▪️ Consulting evidence – encouraging teachers to refer to and critically evaluate multiple sources of evidence from research and the classroom to inform teaching decisions ▪️ Growing repertoire – providing professional learning and collegial collaboration opportunities to enable teachers to expand their range of teaching strategies ▪️ Exercising judgement – empowering and supporting teachers to make informed choices about their practice based on context, student needs and mathematical purpose. ▪️ Reflecting – facilitating regular and ongoing opportunities for teachers to examine and refine their practice By fostering these conditions, school leaders can support teachers in developing their professional expertise, to ensure that all students can engage successfully in effective mathematics learning. 🔗 Download the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gFkkFRpw #mathseducation #mathsedau #educationleadership #teacherPD

In our second post on our Pedagogy in Mathematics position paper: https://lnkd.in/gFkkFRpw we begin to explore some of its detailed statements to analyse the key features of mathematics teaching excellence. We know that effective mathematics teaching is complex - teachers must navigate diverse student needs, balance competing priorities, and draw on both research and practice. So, how can school leaders support them in this work? AAMT’s Pedagogy in Mathematics paper highlights three key themes: 1️⃣ Purposeful Planning – Strong mathematics teaching begins with clear short- and long-term goals that help create a coherent learning experience that activates and builds on students’ prior knowledge. Intentional and purposeful task selection and facilitated connection-making helps develop students’ conceptual understanding and fluency. Leaders can support teachers in understanding and developing these key components of effective planning, enabling them to strategically sequence learning and in fostering a shared understanding of key concepts and common misconceptions. 2️⃣ Developing Mathematical Proficiency – Teachers need to use clear explanations, manipulatives and multiple representations to enable students to develop mathematical proficiency in all its forms. Leaders play a vital role in championing an approach where teachers make informed choices about practice and in empowering and enabling them to develop their repertoire of pedagogies. Promoting high expectations and fostering a school-wide culture of meaningful mathematical discussion supports students in building mathematical meaning. 3️⃣ Supporting All Learners – As every student engages with mathematics differently and progresses at a different rate, differentiation is critical, but effective differentiation doesn’t require entirely separate activities. Intentional adjustments to support and challenge learners within shared learning experiences, the use of considered questioning, quality feedback techniques and structured and strategic practice and consolidation activities are effective strategies to respond to diverse student needs. Leaders can support their teachers in developing across these three practices by fostering a culture of professional growth, equipping them with diverse teaching strategies, encouraging evidence-based decision-making and providing opportunities for collaboration, reflection, and continuous learning. By equipping teachers with the time, resources, and professional learning opportunities they need, leaders can help drive excellence in mathematics teaching for all students. 🔗 Dowload AAMT’s Pedagogy in Mathematics: https://lnkd.in/gFkkFRpw #mathseducation #mathsedau #mathspedagogy

We are excited to announce the release of our highly anticipated paper, 'Pedagogy in Mathematics', which outlines key elements of effective mathematics teaching and provides a framework for action to implement these recommendations: https://lnkd.in/gFkkFRpw. Our position, which draws on the collective expertise of educators, researchers, and leaders in mathematics education, is that no single pedagogical approach can meet the needs of every mathematics learner. Effective mathematics teaching relies on a range of intentional and high-quality practices that can be tailored to specific contexts, learners and purposes. As the peak body in mathematics education in Australia, we recognise the critical role that school leaders play in fostering a culture that empowers, equips and supports teachers to make informed and thoughtful pedagogical choices. Facilitating ongoing opportunities for teachers to reflect on practice, expand professional knowledge and explore new teaching strategies allows them to build the flexible repertoire of pedagogical approaches that our paper endorses. We invite teachers, school leaders and decision-makers to download the full paper: https://lnkd.in/gFkkFRpw. Also, stay connected with us for in-depth explorations of the paper's elements in the coming months. This position paper is more than just a guide; it is an invitation to reflect, question, and develop our practices to ensure mathematics education continues to meet the needs of all learners. Our goal is to focus on building professional expertise rather than prescribing particular approaches, so that collectively we can create mathematics classrooms where all students are engaged and have the opportunity to succeed. #mathseducation #mathsedau #mathspedagogy

As the peak body for mathematics education in Australia, we’re thrilled today to release our highly anticipated paper ‘Pedagogy in Mathematics’: https://lnkd.in/gFkkFRpw. This document draws on the collective expertise of educators, researchers, and leaders in mathematics education to outline the key elements of effective mathematics teaching. The paper also provides practical guidance in the form of a framework for action to help teachers, school leaders and decision makers implement the recommendations. Differences in how students learn and engage with mathematics mean no single approach can meet all learners’ needs. The flexible approach advocated in our paper empowers educators to make informed professional judgements. Teachers should draw upon a rich collection of research-informed and high-quality strategies and select practices intentionally, tailored to specific contexts, learners and purposes. School leaders meanwhile have an instrumental role in fostering cultures that equip, support, and empower teachers to make thoughtful and informed pedagogical choices in their mathematics teaching and learning. We’ll be posting much more about this document over the next few months, exploring elements of the paper in greater depth.
