Important Update: NDIS Changes Affecting Participant Funding Attention NDIS participants: There have been significant changes to the NDIS scheme, effective October 3rd, 2024, impacting how you can utilize your funding. Key Updates: NDIS Supports: Your funding now covers only "NDIS Supports" defined by the NDIA. Two lists outline eligible and banned items, available in both Plain English and Easy Read formats. Replacement Options: If your plan includes now-banned items, you may continue using your funding if explicitly mentioned in the plan. However, replacements are available under specific conditions: Normal Household Items: Robot vacuums, small fridges, etc., can be requested if proven necessary for disability-related independence. Communication Tools: Smartwatches, tablets, or apps aiding communication can be requested if directly related to your disability. Funding Periods: While the maximum plan duration remains 12 months, future options may include longer plans (up to 5 years) with unused funds carrying over to the second year (excluding large equipment purchases). Debts and Flexibility: Purchasing banned items not included in your plan can lead to NDIA-raised debts. However, the first year offers more flexibility. Debts are only pursued if exceeding $1,500 or after two warnings. The NDIA will consider purchase intent and participant disability when evaluating debt cancellation. Stay Informed: Regularly check resources from the Department of Social Services and Every Australian Counts for ongoing updates. Engage with community discussions for valuable insights. How to Find Banned Items: NDIS Website: Visit the NDIS website for comprehensive information on eligible/banned items. Plain English/Easy Read Versions: Access both versions of the banned items list for clear understanding. Contact Your NDIS Planner/Coordinator: They offer personalized assistance regarding banned items. NDIS Provider Register: Check if specific items are banned by providers (compliance actions section). Stay Updated: Regularly review the NDIS website or subscribe to relevant newsletters for ongoing information. Checking Provider Status: NDIS Provider Register - Part 2: This section provides information on compliance actions against providers, including bans. Search Functionality: Look up specific providers by name or registration details. Contact the NDIS Commission: For further clarification on provider bans or compliance issues. By understanding these changes, you can effectively manage your NDIS funding and support needs.
