The Australian Airports Association National Conference in Brisbane has turned into a bit of a news and ideas waterfall. With a few more hours before I need to hop to the airport and return to Sydney, here's a few of them that caught my interest:
~Virgin Australia is on a major push to gain ground on Qantas Group. CEO Jayne Hrdlicka might have announced her departure, but it feels like she will stay as long as it takes to ensure the airline is in the best position to continue its upward trajectory, even if that means going well into next year.
~Hrdlicka says that the possible QR partnership will create huge opportunities for staff across VA, including pilots and cabin crew, including the ability for them to go to Qatar to train and gain experience with the 777 and A350
~The above, she says, will create jobs in Australia as the staff heading off to Qatar will have to have their roles backfilled
~It's a key period for VA as it will want to capitalise on the opportunity available now while Qantas tries to rebuild its brand reputation, but the fact still is that QF market share is strong, QF stock price is stronger and QFF is QFF... a unicorn for the airline. Do Roy Morgan brand trust rankings, where Qantas is almost stone cold last, matter? Genuine question.
~Zack Alcott, Co-CEO at Get Skilled Access and brother of wheelchair tennis legend Dylan says that for every dollar the industry invests in accessibility, it could get back up to $13. It's a massive missed opportunity
~He also noted that accessibility upgrades can start straight away through training of staff. They don't need to be big investments like lifts, ramps and other physical items
~Check out the MEL case study - it's put its best foot forward in terms of being accessible with the Melbourne Airport Assist a project
~SAF and sustainable fuels were also a big talking point, with the idea that NSW could significantly leverage the SAF economy if it played its cards right. Is it playing its cards right?
~SYD has gone on the front foot as well with CEO Scott Charlton announcing a big investment ($200m) into Terminal 2 which will see a new layout, next gen kiosks, security machines and the promise of going kerb to airside in under 15 minutes. As someone who flies out of T2 most of the time, I feel it's much needed. Western Sydney Airport is about to take the stage!
~In a small side alley presentation, the AAA called for much greater competition in commercial aviation. Nothing new there, but it highlighted the fact that if you're a North Queensland Cowboys fan and want to get from Townsville to Sydney or Melbourne for a game, you better start saving early - they are some of the most uncompetitive routes in Australia
Today's issue of Travel Daily and travelBulletin had further reporting on the conference.
