Updates

  • Our CEO, Richard Kirkman, was recently named among some incredible individuals in The Australian's #GreenList Top 100. This recognition is a testament to the incredible work our entire Veolia Australia & New Zealand team is doing to drive #EcologicalTransformation. Our waste, water and energy sectors are growing in the renewable space. At Veolia, we're not just managing these resources – we're unlocking valuable by-products like biogas, captured CO2, and heat from energy recovery facilities, which are the building blocks of a truly circular economy. As we push to decarbonise our own operations by expanding our renewable energy capabilities, we're advocating for a broader recognition of alternative energy sources using innovative technology to leverage untapped potential and accelerate our transition to a more sustainable future, supporting our customers and our communities. Thanks to helen trinca and her team for compiling this list and shining a light on the transformative work happening in our sector!

  • The recent National Waste Policy Action Plan Review shows that Australia has ground to make up if we want to reach our 2030 waste targets. We’re working harder than ever to support the government in achieving these goals, but we need bold action to accelerate our journey towards a circular economy. Our CEO, Richard Kirkman, recently shared five key policy commitments that could rapidly bring Australia back on track: 1️⃣ Identical and higher waste levies across all states and territories 2️⃣ Streamlined approvals for vital recycling infrastructure 3️⃣ Reversal of export bans on recycled resources 4️⃣ Mandatory recovery scheme for all products 5️⃣ Carbon tax for all landfills, regardless of size These strategies have proven effective on a global level, for example, extended producer responsibility (EPR) combined with appropriate levies ensures viable end-of-life recovery routes for products. We need system-wide change driven by policies that encourage investment in recycling infrastructure and foster markets for recovered resources. The renewable energy sector has shown what's possible with the right government support. We believe that with the right policies, Australia would be a world leader in recycling and circular economy practices, potentially creating new export markets and being a recycling, repair, and reuse superpower. If we can succeed in implementing these changes, we have the potential to become the generation that revolutionised our approach to waste! #CircularEconomy #Recycling #RenewableEnergy

  • For Steph, a former racehorse rider and aged care nurse, committing to a truck license felt like a bit of a gamble. But she’s found her true calling behind the wheel of an Iveco hook-lift vehicle thanks to our Women on Wheels program. After a career change due to injury, she took a leap of faith and joined the program in Tasmania. Now, she's living a long-held dream of driving trucks, collecting skip bins across the beautiful Apple Isle. Women on Wheels offers job training, but also works to break barriers, foster inclusivity, and address the national driver shortage. We're proud to have welcomed Steph and other talented women into the trucking industry. "Since getting into the program, I haven't looked back. I love being on the road and the freedom that comes with that," Steph says. • We’re thrilled to share that an alliance between Veolia, Defence Australia, and local Indigenous business entrepreneur William (Billy) Feeney has transformed Darwin's waste landscape with the launch of EcoMob, the city's first commercial food organics recovery facility. The new business was a direct result of Defence and Veolia working together to halve food waste on Defence bases by 2030. A trial to sort and process food organics onsite was a success but it quickly became apparent that this could work even more effectively off base. EcoMob decided to take on the job to process food waste through dehydrators and distribute the output/fertiliser back into the community. With Veolia and Defence providing organic material, dehydrators, expertise and a location, EcoMob's food organics processing business was successfully launched. As the Northern Territory’s first commercial food organics facility, it has diverted more food organics from landfill and created employment opportunities for the local community. We are thrilled with the outcomes of this project and excited about the future growth of NT's circular economy. Thanks to Defence Australia and EcoMob for helping make this happen! • We're thrilled to share that we are working on an agreement with Macquarie Point Development Corporation to create Australia's most advanced public space embedded energy system at Macquarie Point in Hobart. This precinct will provide renewable electricity and energy to produce cooling and heating for buildings across the precinct. The proposal includes the use of energy sources like solar panels, heat pumps, and state-of-the-art heat exchange technology to capture renewable energy and heat from waste. The result is a holistic ecosystem that could be a blueprint for how we think about urban energy production and use. We are passionate about our responsibility to pioneer solutions that address issues like the climate crisis while enhancing community living. This project in Hobart is the kind of innovation we will continue to drive forward as part of our #GreenUp strategy, creating a more eco-friendly future for everyone. • As a new year begins, we want to invite you to join us on our #EcologicalTransformation journey. 2025 is another year of immense opportunities as we continue to #GreenUp by accelerating our processes and technologies, like completing more new renewable energy projects, repurposing more non-recyclable waste, and generating more clean drinking water for remote communities. We’re excited for what lies ahead – together, we all play a role in decarbonising, depolluting and regenerating our resources to develop a sustainable world.

  • Veolia has signed a new six-year contract with The Department of Defence that will see a powerful data driven approach brought to its waste management processes. Using our industry-leading reporting platform, EcoLogic, we will help Defence deliver on its target to divert 80% of its waste from landfill by 2030. This new contract builds on a 10-year working relationship between Veolia and Defence, which delivered waste management improvements around the country, including advances in FOGO processing, innovative treatment for complex waste types and a significant reduction in waste going to landfill. We look forward to working closely with Defence long into the future and achieving new resource recovery and waste management goals together! Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gw_yPfnQ
