About us

Victoria Police was established in 1853. It provides policing services to the Victorian community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, working to keep more than 6 million Victorians safe. Police officers and Protective Services Officers (PSOs) are supported in their roles by public service professionals who work as administrators, managers, and specialists in a range of functions such as legal services, accounting, psychology and forensic sciences. Our workforce is expanding with the recruitment of more than 3000 police, 100 PSOs and the introduction of the Supervising Police Custody Officer role. Victoria Police is an inclusive, equal-opportunity employer that values employees’ skills and experience. We offer flexible, challenging and rewarding careers that make a real difference to the community. Effective frontline response service delivery is provided through 54 Police Service Areas (PSAs), split across 21 divisions within four regions - North West Metro, Southern Metro, Eastern, and Western. These regional boundaries correspond with those of other Victorian government departments, enhancing cross-department service delivery, particularly in the area of emergency management. • Did you know that bystanders are one of the most common groups to witness family violence?  A bystander can be a neighbour, a friend, or a colleague. As a bystander, you play a powerful role in deterring, preventing and reducing the harm caused by family violence.  If you or someone close to you discloses they are a victim of family violence, please believe them, and encourage them to contact police or a support service. 🟠 1800 RESPECT – 1800 737 732 or www.1800respect.org.au   🟠 SAFE STEPS – 1800 015 188 or www.safesteps.org.au If you, or someone you know is in immediate danger, please contact Triple Zero (000). #16DaysOfActivism #Bystanders

  • When Victoria Police announced the roll out of Disability Liaison Officers (DLOs), Senior Sergeant Karen Barnes knew she could draw on personal experience to help better the community.     Growing up alongside a brother with cerebral palsy, she saw the role as an opportunity to raise awareness amongst her colleagues, and ensure they provide fair, accessible and an inclusive service to people with disability.    For International Day of People with Disability we sat down with DLO Karen about her role and the importance of visibility. • Meet Luka 👋 He recently spent the day as a junior police officer exploring some of our different specialist units. Luka’s mum, Johanna, placed the winning bid on the ‘Junior Police Officer for a Day’ experience, offered as part of the Blue Ribbon Ball online auction in 2023. The Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation continues the memory of Victoria Police employees who have died in the line of duty, by supporting community projects. Luka has wanted to be a police officer since he was a little kid and had a great day meeting the officers and seeing all the different areas of policing. Who knows, maybe we'll see him in the blue uniform in a few years' time. 🤔

  • On a quiet Monday morning in 2020, $3.2million in gold and cash was stolen in Melbourne’s CBD.     Detectives from the Armed Crime Squad were quick to arrest a suspect but this university lecturer was far from who they expected to execute a gunpoint robbery. The man, with a convincing alibi, claimed he wanted to help find the ‘real’ culprit.     ‘Digging into a gold heist’ is the latest episode from our official podcast, Police Life: The Experts. Listen in as investigators tackle the twist and turns of the third largest armed robbery in Victoria’s history.    Season 2 Episode 2 is out now. Listen here 🎧 https://bit.ly/42OvrCC

  • Earlier this week, members from our Priority and Safer Communities Division, and Gender Equality and Inclusion Division had the privilege of presenting at Pride in Diversity’s Pride in Practice Conference at Marvel Stadium. The presentation shared Victoria Police’s journey to becoming an inclusive organisation for trans and gender diverse employees. This included addressing how we've identified and implemented changes made to date, as well as our continued commitment in supporting our rainbow community. The Pride in Practice Conference is the only national conference dedicated to advancing LGBTIQA+ inclusion in Australian workplaces. This event continues to inspire and spotlight LGBTIQA+ inclusion, with key themes focusing on Intersectionality, LGBTIQA+ women, Trans and Gender Diverse People, First Nations LGBTIQA+ people, Resilience and Empathy, International Reach, the Health Sector and much more. A big thanks to Leading Senior Constable Natalie for sharing her personal journey of affirming her gender whilst working at Victoria Police as a police officer.

Content warning: The contents of this post discuss themes around sexual assault.⁣     Do you understand and practise consent? Consent is not only important, but the law.⁣  ⁣  Everyone has a responsibility to seek consent before engaging in and during sexual activity. Understanding affirmative consent is the first step in having better conversations about sex and consent.     Affirmative consent requires people to explicitly agree to certain activities by either saying “yes” or using physical gestures, like nodding, to let the other person know they’re comfortable with that action.    And it’s not just for new or casual relationships, it's for every relationship – even decades-long.    Consent can also be given or withdrawn, at any time, for any reason.    If you are concerned about something that has happened to you, it’s never too late to report to police.    We have dedicated specialist detectives who investigate all forms of sexual offences. To make a report, contact your local police station or Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT).⁣    If you need support, you can contact:  🟠 1800 RESPECT – 1800 737 732 or www.1800respect.org.au   🟠 SAFE STEPS – 1800 015 188 or www.safesteps.org.au     If you, or someone you know is in immediate danger, please contact Triple Zero (000).    #16DaysOfActivism #AffirmativeConsent For more information on affirmative consent, head to > https://lnkd.in/gUEbu4x
