Victorian Virtual Emergency Department reposted this
We’re delighted to announce that the strong partnership between the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department and Healthdirect Australia has been named a finalist in the Partnering in Healthcare category of the 2024 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards. The Victorian Virtual Emergency Service is provided by Northern Health. Healthdirect Australia manages the Nurse-on-Call nurse triage helpline. Consumers are triaged by nurses on Nurse-On-Call and, if appropriate, are offered the option of being transferred to the Virtual Emergency Service for remote emergency care. Since August 2023, more than 45,000 callers to Nurse-on-Call, who would have previously been advised to attend an emergency department, have been redirected to the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department and assessed from home. Over 80% of these have been successfully managed via video consult, reducing physical attendances at emergency departments across Victoria by over 36,000 presentations. The judging panel for nominations noted the contributions from the two health organisations align with the focus of the Partnering in Healthcare Award, showcasing how services can work together to address common problems and improve outcomes. Dr Loren Sher, Director, VVED said, “This partnership has been a critical first step in building a digital front door in Victoria, one where patients have a simple way to access the right care in the right place at the right time. It is revolutionising the way Victorians can receive healthcare, ensuring every Victorian, regardless of age and geographical location, can receive the same access to high quality urgent care around the clock.” Nigel Shroot, Service Director for Nurse-on-Call at Healthdirect Australia, added: “Together, we help Victorians avoid unnecessary journeys and reduce pressure on the state’s emergency departments. This includes triaging consumers to ensure they are best matched to the VVED as a care pathway, as well as providing the video consultation platform used by consumers and clinicians via healthdirect Video Call. In this way, we support the Victorian Department of Health’s strategic healthcare goals.” Winners will be announced on Tuesday 19 November at an invitation-only gala night to celebrate the 18th year of the Awards.
