Last week, the Wesley Research Institute Health Services Research team presented at the Health Services Research Association of Australia and New Zealand (HSRAANZ) conference at the Royal International Convention Centre (Royal ICC) in Brisbane! This year’s theme ‘Health Services Research in the Digital Age’ resonated with our researchers, as they look to further research in virtual hospital care. The conference welcomed speakers and delegates to explore the current and future challenges and solutions that health services research can offer, as they harness new digital technologies to help build a sustainable, future-ready, and patient-focused healthcare system. Our Health Service Research team presented throughout the course of the the conference, including at the Hospital Without Walls symposium, chaired by Associate Professor Elizabeth Martin, with Dr Olivia Fisher and Kelly McGrath (nee Inglis) who heads up the Care Navigation team at Isaac Navicare, joining the discussion. Dr Caroline Grogan, shared her latest research on an innovative dementia in-home respite service and using inclusive processes to include people living with dementia and family carers in health services research. Shayma M. presented her PhD research, which investigated the most effective digital solutions for boosting appointment attendance based on patient preferences, specific patient needs, and available resources. Belinda Moshi presented a poster, focusing on the realities of digital connectivity for frontline aged-care workers. Exciting News for Clinical Trials in QLD! 📢 Sherman Leung, Head of Research Operations at Wesley Research Institute, has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance (ACTA). ACTA is the national peak body for clinical trials, advancing clinical trial networks, coordinating centres and clinical quality registries led by its Chair Professor Christopher Reid. Its work is critical to improving the health outcomes for all Australians, and we are proud to contribute to this important mission. As the national voice for clinical trials, ACTA’s success is underpinned by funding from the government, to provide leadership into numerous initiatives including the National One Stop Shop, the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework and the National Health and Medical Research Strategy. These initiatives are essential for ensuring that Australia remains a global leader in clinical trials and health and medical research, supporting the nation’s many patients who benefit from evidence-based healthcare. Sherman’s appointment represents an exciting opportunity for greater national representation of the clinical trials sector in Queensland, with the appointment as well of Prof. Nadine Foster at The University of Queensland to the Board. We look forward to the impactful contributions Sherman will bring to ACTA and the strengthened collaboration between ACTA and Queensland’s vibrant research ecosystem. Dr Arutha Kulasinghe, Scientific Director of the Queensland Spatial Biology Centre (QSBC), spoke at the Life Sciences Queensland Ltd (LSQ) networking breakfast this morning. Dr Kulasinghe presented the pioneering work in spatial analysis of the tumour microenvironment by his team at QSBC and The University of Queensland. Spatial biology is advancing our understanding of disease mechanisms through the visualisation of tissue architecture at a cellular and molecular level. This analysis provides invaluable insights into the organisation and interactions of these cells, offering a roadmap for tailored treatments that can target individual cells, organs and diseases to improve patient health. Catch Meg Donovan, PhD and Naomi Berrell from the QSBC team speaking at the Multi-omics 2024 conference in Brisbane this coming week. This week marks a historic milestone for aged care reform in Australia, with the Senate passing the new Aged Care Bill. At the heart of this reform is a rights-based framework prioritising quality and person-centred care, an outcome aligned with recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aged Care. At Wesley Research Institute, we are proud to contribute to this agenda through our Older People, Aged Care, and Dementia Research Program. Our work, generously funded by the Irene Patricia Hunt Memorial Trust, aims to: - Understand gaps in care for older Australians and propose solutions. - Collaborate with partners like BlueCare to enhance services. - Empower consumers by integrating their voices into every step of the research process. One of our flagship projects, the BlueCare Dementia In-Home Respite Program, highlights the power of listening to lived experiences. Through interviews and focus groups, we identified barriers and enablers to support better families navigating dementia care. 🎯 But reform is only the beginning. Sustainable change requires investment in research, consumer engagement, and workforce support. 💖 Your support can make a difference. Donate today to fund research that will lead to real-world improvements in aged care and ensure better outcomes for patients, carers, and families across Australia and beyond - https://lnkd.in/g3rxBqaZ BlueCare UnitingCare Queensland UnitingCare Australia Caroline Grogan, PhD Elizabeth Martin Olivia Fisher Belinda Moshi Shayma M.
