The State’s premier cultural organisation, housing WA’s scientific and cultural collection.

About us

The Western Australian Museum was established in 1891 (as the ‘Perth Museum’) and its initial collections were of geological, ethnological and biological specimens. Indeed, it can claim to be one of the oldest scientific institutions in the State. In 1959, its botanical collection was transferred to the new Herbarium and it continued to concentrate on earth sciences and zoology. The 1960s and 1970s saw the addition of responsibility for developing and maintaining the State’s anthropological, archaeological, maritime archaeological and social and cultural history collections. The Museum’s aim is to advocate knowledge about the collections and communicate it to the public through a variety of media, but particularly through a program of exhibitions and publications.

  • 🤿 Day in the life: Maritime Archaeologist edition. Recently, our Maritime Archaeology team visited Garden Island to inspect the WWII anti-submarine boom net in Cockburn Sound. These boom nets, made of timber pylons and steel mesh, were used during WWII to protect major Australian harbours in Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney, Albany and Fremantle from potential submarine attacks. Decommissioned in 1964, the Cockburn Sound site is protected by a Heritage Council of WA Conservation Order, requiring regular inspections to record and monitor its layout and condition, as well as any human impact and the flora and fauna present at the site. On this visit, the team recorded the recent collapse of one of the 'Dolphins'—supports made from groups of timber piles driven into the seabed. Dolphin No. 60 now rests on the sea floor, providing a refuge for various fish species. The data collected will be used to update the Museum’s records about the location. And this is just a drop in the ocean of the work they do!

The WA Museum Boola Bardip's latest exhibition 'To the Moon' has ended on a high note, welcoming more than 107,000 visitors from across WA, interstate and overseas. With humanity on the brink of returning to the Moon after over 50 years, 'To the Moon'—curated by Helen Simondson, the Manager of the WA Museum Boola Bardip—illuminated what we know and what’s yet to come, all while retracing our poetic yearnings for the Moon. We couldn’t have brought it to you without the incredible support of our exhibition partners and we are thankful to the many organisations, artists and staff who helped bring it to life. While 'To the Moon' has blasted off, a new Moon will rise at the WA Museum Boola Bardip in 2025. We’re thrilled to have acquired our own 'Museum of the Moon' installation, which spans five metres in diameter and showcases the Moon as seen from the southern hemisphere—available for visitors to enjoy year-round.
