Congratulations to our Director of Research, Dr Kerrie Noonan, who recently won Public Health Palliative Care International’s Research Impact Award, presented at the organisation’s eighth annual conference in Switzerland 🇨🇭 Dr Noonan won the award for her pioneering work in developing and advancing the concept of death literacy, which is basically being informed of how to handle death and grief, and make good decisions around end-of-life topics. Her work has significantly improved public understanding of end-of-life topics, and helped shape policies and practices worldwide, and continues to show how being more informed about death can bring communities closer and create lasting, positive change. For example, the Death Literacy Index Dr Noonan developed is used globally, and initiatives she founded like Dying to Know Day are celebrated all over the world and have been raising awareness for more than a decade. Dr Noonan said, “It is such an honour to be acknowledged by my public health palliative care peers and colleagues. How we die matters, and every day people support their friends, family and community so they don’t have to face caregiving, dying or grieving alone. “This award helps keep the light shining on this vital care and support, which often goes unnoticed.”

A massive congratulations to Rachel Edwards winner of the Healing Heart Award (colleague nominated) in the NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards! Rachel Edwards is the Nursing Unit Manager of Paediatric and Neonatal Care, Dubbo Health Service, and is genuinely committed to working honestly, openly and respectfully with families and patients to improve not only their experience in our care, but their knowledge of health, and their ability to make informed choices. As a leader Rachel is encouraging in a way that leads people to grow. She is not afraid to have direct conversations or challenge staff to reflect, grow and become better clinicians. She is accountable and curious, striving to learn more herself as a manager. “I always wanted to be in a profession that helped people in a crisis or a difficult situation,” said Rachel. “Being present and compassionate in life-changing moments is what I enjoy the most.” “I love the genuine emotions within the nursing profession and experiencing the real side of the human beings we see each day,” said Rachel. “And being able to project their care in the right direction. Understanding and kindness matter.” Thank you, Rachel, for everything you do! For more information, including a full list of the finalists, visit: https://lnkd.in/g7EKsxZ
