The Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience has recently published the Planning for Animals Handbook. This handbook is guided by research evidence that shows that the integration of animals, including wildlife, into emergency management planning and arrangements is critical to human health and safety, as well as the economy, biodiversity and ecosystem health. Simone Vitali, WHA Program Manager, provided wildlife expertise to the working group that developed this strategic guide that is an essential tool for planning and preparedness for animals in emergencies. It is available to download here 📗 https://lnkd.in/gWtTS2YG WHA has developed some specific principles for the effective management of wildlife in emergencies that are well aligned with the broader guidance of the handbook ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gwAc__6d

Visiting national parks not only makes people healthier, but reduces their medical costs. A study of people in Adelaide found that their trips to metro national parks saved the SA health system $140 million per year. This is 50 times more than the cost of running the national parks. It shows that national parks are a great investment and deliver a large economic benefit to the community. The study also found that distance is the main barrier to accessing national parks and disproportionately affects people from the most disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. “Creating new parks in areas where people do not currently have easy access to a national park would be expected to deliver benefits to those communities and for the health system overall,” said lead author Assoc Prof Adam Loch from The University of Adelaide. WHA’s International One Health Program, in partnership with the IUCN Conservation Planning Specialist Group and the The Orangutan Conservancy, are hosting a hybrid workshop in Sydney from 9-13th December 2024, in Wildlife Health Risk Analysis (WHRA). The purpose of this event is to bring together local, regional, and global wildlife health stakeholders and participants, engaging in-person and online, in a week-long workshop in wildlife health risk analysis and systems thinking. Participants will share perspectives on wildlife health, identifying how risk analyses, effective risk communication, and the development of resilient systems and workforces, assists us to better understand and enhance wildlife health, biosecurity, and biodiversity restoration, for improved #OneHealth outcomes. 💻 There are still a few spots available to attend online! For further information, and to enquire about registering to attend online, please email Joe Cashmore, Project Officer IOH, jcashmore@wildlifehealthaustralia.com.au

Congratulations Michelle Wille, member of the National Avian Influenza Wild Bird (NAIWB) Surveillance Program Steering Group, for being awarded a 2024 Environmental Biosecurity Award 🏆 Tiggy Grillo AM , WHA COO, said, “it is fantastic to have Dr Michelle Wille’s exceptional contribution to reducing the risks posed to the natural environment by High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza H5N1 (2.3.4.4b) by raising awareness with key stakeholders in government and non-government agencies. Australia is fortunate to have Michelle as one of the members of the NAIWB Steering Group, managed by WHA, where she is enormously generous with her expertise and contributions.” Michelle Wille said, "the recognition that comes with this award is extremely important to me. This type of work is often not recognised in academic settings, despite being highly valued by stakeholders in government, NGOs and the general public. So an award like this, makes it all worthwhile.” Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry #AusBioAwards #biosecurity #science

Do you work with, volunteer with, or care for wildlife? Do you have questions about avian influenza, what it does to wildlife and how best to protect yourself and wildlife from such risks? If so then these information and biosecurity training sessions will help answer your questions and equip 'frontline' workers on the safe use of PPE and methods for establishing biosecure areas. See details below ⬇️
What is avian influenza? What does it do to wildlife? How can I protect myself and wildlife? Murdoch University veterinary epidemiologist Dr Bethany Jackson, and Sarah Thorpe are currently running a series of information and biosecurity training sessions to answer these questions and help us prepare for the global avian influenza outbreak (HPAI 2.3.4.4b). While the highly pathogenic strain has not yet been detected in Australia, we can protect people and wildlife by having the right tools and information. The sessions are ideal for anyone who works with, volunteers with, or cares for wildlife. The biosecurity training sessions teach 'frontline' workers the safe use of PPE and methods for establishing biosecure areas. Visit the Eventbrite page to find a session near you. Current locations include Esperance, Mandurah, Murdoch and Perth (North), with more to be announced https://lnkd.in/gtnyVkpk These sessions are supported by Wildlife Health Australia. Visit their website to find information and resources on Avian Influenza. https://lnkd.in/gSBzY8hD #HPAI #AvianInfluenza #Biosecurity #BiosecurityOneHealth
