The results are in. Spending time in Adelaide’s national parks isn’t just good for the soul—it’s great for your health, too! A recent study by the University of Adelaide found that regular park visitors are 4% healthier than those who don’t visit. The better health of regular visitors to our metro parks equated to $140m a year in potential avoided health expenditure on chronic diseases in SA and park visits also helped to boost the state's economy, the study found. With parks like Cleland, Morialta, and Onkaparinga within reach for most Adelaide residents, the benefits are closer than you think. Spending time in nature can improve physical and mental wellbeing, making it the perfect excuse to visit your local park. If you are a regular parks visitor, we'd love to know - what's your favourite park in South Australia? Or if you've been thinking about visiting some of our state's many spectacular parks, which ones are on your wish list? Comment below. Helping South Australians conserve, sustain and prosper.
About us
Our purpose is to help South Australians conserve, sustain and prosper. It’s a big role, and we need passionate people to help us achieve it. We help our environment stay healthy. We manage water for the future, respond to climate change, connect people to nature and sustain our state’s natural resources. We take a whole-of-landscape approach to conserving native species and vegetation, working with primary producers, Aboriginal people, land managers, conservationists, communities and all levels of government. We also protect against fire and flood. We help keep the economy healthy. It is our clean environment that produces the premium food and wine that our state is known for – and contributes $18.2b per year to our economy. We connect people to nature. SA’s unique environment provides places for adventure, exercise, congregation and relaxation. We look after iconic sites including Cleland Wildlife Park, Seal Bay and Naracoorte Caves, part of the nature-based tourism industry that generates around $5.3b each year for our state. At DEW, we truly believe we make a difference. Our people are passionate about what they do. Working together, we are tackling some big challenges to help care for SA now and into the future. You've probably walked or driven past it a million times. But do you know the fascinating history behind this landmark tower on The Esplanade in Semaphore? Built in 1875, The Semaphore Time Ball Tower played a vital role in ship navigation in a time before wireless telegraphy, enabling passing vessels to check the accuracy of their chronometers by 'rating' them against a time ball at the top of the tower. Chronometers were used to determine longitude and just a few seconds of inaccuracy could put a ship off course by several miles - so precision was really important! So how did the tower work? It was pretty simple, really. The ball was hoisted at 12.57pm and dropped at 1pm by electric signal from the Adelaide Observatory. The only one of its kind in South Australia, the tower operated from 1875 and ceased in 1932, with the advent of wireless time signals. It was confirmed as a State Heritage Place in 1980. With high temperatures expected this weekend, it’s essential to help our furry, feathered, and finned friends stay comfortable. Here’s how: ▪️ Make sure pets have cool areas out of the sun. ▪️ Keep water bowls shaded, and add ice to keep them cool. ▪️ Never leave pets in the car. ▪️ If the pavement’s too hot for bare feet, it’s too hot for paws. ▪️ Indoors, let pets relax on tiled floors if possible. ▪️ Freeze dog food or treats for a refreshing snack. ▪️ Wet down the chook run to create a cool surface. ▪️ Shade outdoor fishponds, and keep indoor tanks away from sunny windows. ▪️ Ensure hutches stay shaded throughout the day. Stay safe and keep your pets comfortable in the heat! Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gbzvFVJw #hotweather #keeppetssafe
