Funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), this project aims to equip the sector with valuable data and insights for long-term planning and informed decision making. Irrigation strategies from fruit set to veraison to maximise profit is the focus of a workshop being held this Thursday (5 December) in McLaren Vale. From toolmaker to viticulturalist Shaun McBeath grew up on a farm, went to university but did not enjoy it, and decided to work as a toolmaker for a decade. He became bored being inside a shed all day and wanted to get back outside and involved in agriculture so studied a Bachelor of Applied Science (Viticulture). Shaun went on to viticulture roles including Regional Vineyards Manager for Australia for Pernod Ricard Winemakers and now for Bartsch Vignerons. He uses the theory learnt at university every day but says practical experience gained along the way is also important. Sparkling wine has been one of the stand-out wine categories over the past two decades around the globe. According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), between 2002 and 2018 global production of sparkling wine increased by 57 per cent, from 1.25 billion litres to 2 billion litres – a record level. Tomorrow (27 November) is the last day for service providers to submit a request for quote for this initiative which aims to help winegrape growers in the Riverland, Riverina and Murray Valley to identify new revenue opportunities. The initiative is a collaboration between Wine Australia and AgriFutures Australia.
