About us

Women in STEMM Australia began in 2014 and has grown into a nationally and internationally recognised association for women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM). Our core purpose is to advocate for gender equity and equality in Australia’s STEMM sectors, and support initiatives that drive change in the workplace and learning space, engage on gender equity in STEMM, whilst upholding core values such as respect and scientific excellence. Our role is to ensure women in STEMM with the capacity and capability to contribute to the innovation agenda are equally included, recognized and rewarded for their experience and expertise. Our philosophy is “Pay It Forward” and we uphold the core values of scientific excellence and respect for all. Our activities welcome and aim to benefit all women in STEMM regardless of their discipline and profession. Women in STEMM Australia has created a diverse, inclusive network of STEMM professionals at all levels of academia, industry, education, business and government. Our blog is our cornerstone feature, where STEMM though leaders at all levels share their career experiences, their views on gender equity and diversity, best practices and policies, and their experiences of the changing nature of work in the STEMM sector. Our website and social media profiles are our primary engagement platforms so we encourage you to get online. We regularly post profiles of Australia’s women in STEMM – students and professionals. Increased gender equity, diversity and inclusion benefits everyone. If you identify as a woman in STEMM, or you are someone championing change in STEMM, then Women in STEMM Australia is for you. • As the year draws to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared in 2024. Together, we have celebrated milestones, tackled challenges, and made strides toward creating a more inclusive and equitable future for women in STEMM. 💡We put the spotlight on menopause and the impact that it can have on our women leaders. 🎂 We celebrated our 10th birthday! We celebrated on social media by looking back to where it all started (over a coffee by our co-founders Michelle Gallaher and Dr Marguerite Evans-Galea AM), our key activities and successes, and our hope for the future on this journey of advocacy and network building! 🚶♀️➡️ We launched our new event, STEMM Strolls this year, that aims to bring STEMM students and professionals together in regional areas. We held the STEMM Strolls at five regional locations across Australia: Wollongong, Townsville, Ballarat, Bendigo and Sunshine Coast where locals got together to find new networks, mentors, and support groups. 🙏 A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors Deakin University, Department of Industry, Science and Resources (for the menopause panel), Merck Group, iAccelerate, University of Wollongong, Federation University Australia, Dulux, La Trobe University, Bendigo Tech School, Inspiring Australia Queensland, Soroptimist International HQ, James Cook University, University of the Sunshine Coast (STEMM Strolls partners and sponsors). Your support has been instrumental in making these events a reality. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of our Board - Priya Rani, PhD, SMIEEE, Dr Nikki Sims-Chilton, Natalie Chapman RTTP GAICD, Dr Morley Muse, Sarah Chapman FRACI, and Professor Madhu Bhaskaran FTSE. As we look ahead to 2025, our mission remains as critical as ever. We aim to deepen our connections, amplify underrepresented voices, and continue breaking barriers. Together, we can create opportunities for women at every stage of their STEMM journey and foster a culture of belonging and excellence. Wishing you a joyful and restorative holiday season.

🏆 A big congratulations to A/Prof. Nadine Marcus, who won the 2024 Engineering Mentoring Award! She has guided, motivated, and encouraged many individuals over the years to grow both personally and professionally, helping them achieve success in their careers, make lasting impacts in their fields, and earn numerous awards. "I had some very strong mentors in my own journey into academia as a junior academic, who recognised my potential and championed me through good times and bad, so it was very important for me to give back. One of my strengths is recognising other people’s capabilities and helping them to grow and harness these, and also working with their weaknesses and supporting them in improving these skills." She is a strong proponent of Women in Engineering (winning the Faculty award for Women in Engineering in 2022) and aspires to address the STEM gender balance by mentoring female university research students. "Because I didn’t have many female role models, I strive to really make an impact by setting a good example for my junior female colleagues and students." A/Prof. Marcus was nominated by colleagues Gelareh Mohammadi, Ali Darejeh, Inmaculada Tomeo-Reyes, Jake Renzella and Sasha Vassar. 📸 A/Prof. Marcus with some of her mentees, including Hannah Beder, Heather W., Jake Renzella, Gelareh Mohammadi, and Sasha Vassar.

  • Huge congratulations to all of them! What a fantastic set of role models!

Sixty stellar scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians were officially announced today as Australia’s new Superstars of STEM by the Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic MP. The new Superstars highlight the strong diversity of women and non-binary people in Australian science and technology – including 3 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander superstar scientists, 14 from regional Australia, and Superstars from a constellation of economic, social and cultural backgrounds. They are drawn from every state and territory around the country. Among the Superstars are a researcher using AI to help businesses understand, measure and reduce their impact on biodiversity, a climate scientist studying floods to keep Australians safe, a mathematician using numbers to tackle violence against women, and an engineer using light and high frequency tech to detect hidden dangers from cancer to concealed weapons. Over the next two years, the Superstars will undergo intensive training and skills development to give them the experience and confidence to step into the public spotlight as go-to media commentators for science and technology stories. They’ll also do hundreds of school visits to encourage young people into a future in science and technology. Read more about the newest #SuperstarsOfSTEM: https://lnkd.in/gpg-BkiQ

I am thrilled to share that I have been awarded the UTS Women in Engineering and IT scholarship for the second time, a recognition that would not have been possible without the support of two extraordinary individuals in my life. First, I want to sincerely thank my supervisor, Professor Long Nghiem, whose incredible character has been a true inspiration to me. His ability to not only guide but also inspire has had a profound impact on my growth. I have learned so much from his insights, encouragement, and constant belief in me. I feel truly fortunate to have him as my supervisor. Second, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my mentor, Elena Stocker. Being guided by someone with her remarkable character has been a rare and precious opportunity. Her unwavering support has shown me the way forward. I am deeply grateful for the lessons and inspiration she has shared with me. To both of you, thank you for playing such a pivotal role in my journey!

    ‘24 VMC Honour roll inductee| ‘23 Gender Equity Award finalist| Women's Agenda '22 STEM Winner| Co-CEO iSTEM Co./DEIR.AI| Co-Chair STA Committee| Director, Women in STEMM AU| Energy Transition Expert| Keynote Speaker

We Are Our Stories Last Wednesday was a profoundly special day—not just for me, but for my family, friends, community, and ancestors. I was humbled and deeply honoured to be named among the 25 inductees for the 2024 Victorian Multicultural Commission Honour Roll. These awards recognise extraordinary Victorians and organisations for their contributions to multicultural Victoria. As I walked into Government House, I felt the presence of my late mum. I wore her wrappers, coral beads, and traditional attire, a tribute to her unwavering love and belief in me. I wanted her to see her baby girl standing tall, making her proud. It was a moment filled with nostalgia—remembering my late parents and late sisters—but also immense gratitude for the present. I was surrounded by my future: my dear husband, Eli Muse who postponed his trip to San Francisco to stand by me; my remaining and only sister, Dakorim Briggs CFE, MSc my friend-turned-sister and business partner, Dr Ruwangi Fernando and my first son, Shaun. Seeing Shaun witness the ceremony was everything. I wanted him to feel inspired and to know that his dreams have no limits. For me, this honour is a reflection of a journey—one rooted in service, resilience, and advocacy. At iSTEM Co. and DEIR.AI the work Dr Ruwangi Fernando and I do is for all women in STEM, but I’m acutely aware of the compounded biases faced by migrant women. Every day, I use my voice to shine a light on intersectional diversity and to advance equity for all women. I’m immensely proud to have contributed to the progress of multicultural Australians through iSTEM Co. DEIR.AI and the many organisations that trust me to drive change, including Women in STEMM Australia, Science & Technology Australia, Jemena, Diversity Council Australia Ltd RISE Panel, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering Elevate Panel and Wyndham City Council One of my proudest moments was co-delivering the Diverse STEM Women in Wyndham Report, a project that amplifies the voices of diverse women in STEM including migrant women. It was an honour to celebrate the day alongside inspiring leaders such as the Governor of Victoria, Professor The Hon. Margaret Gardner; Premier Jacinta Allan; Minister Multicultural Affairs Ingrid Stitt ; VMC Chair Vivienne Nguyen ; and other ministers and community champions. I was especially delighted to be inducted alongside my friend, Fabiola Campbell 🇻🇪Until the End 🇻🇪 whose work empowering migrant women continues to inspire me. To my fellow inductees—congratulations! To the leaders tirelessly working behind the scenes to create a multicultural Australia—I see you. Your efforts matter. For all of us who have crossed seas to make this beautiful country home, may this be a testament to the possibilities that await when we come together to advance Australia fair. Here’s to many more milestones and victories for us all. #MAE2024 #VMC #MulticulturalAustralia
