In Lowndes County, Alabama, where 80% of households lack adequate plumbing systems, IWSH pioneered a solution that both maximizes skilled plumber time and opens new career pathways in the trades. The IWSH Household Plumbing Survey empowers communities by enabling residents and students to identify plumbing needs with minimal training. In collaboration with the BlackBelt Unincorporated Wastewater Program, IWSH staff trained two groups of Lowndes County high school students in 2023 and 2024 to apply the survey to 24 homes: • Students gained valuable exposure to a career in plumbing • IWSH skilled plumber volunteers could focus their expertise where it matters most - making the complex repairs that keep communities safe. Well-deserved recognition for GP Russ Chaney, former IAPMO CEO, who was honored with the prestigious ANSI Chairman's Award at last night’s ceremony. This special honor recognizes his contributions to the standardization community, including his role in developing the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC). After joining IAPMO in 1995, Russ spearheaded the advancement of the UPC achieving ANSI accreditation in 2000, and making it the first plumbing code to be designated as an American National Standard. He continued to champion standardization efforts, leading IAPMO to achieve ANSI - American National Standards Institute Audited Designator status and contribute to the development of an international water efficiency standard. It was truly moving to witness the standing ovation he received last night, a clear demonstration of the high regard and admiration he has earned throughout his career. Congratulations, Russ!
