The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) oversees and leads the financial management of the organisation. As a key member of the VRC Executive Team, the CFO will be responsible for ensuring the financial health of VRC, overseeing financial planning and analysis, managing accounting and reporting systems, and providing strategic financial guidance to the CEO and the Board. Consideration for this role to also be the Company Secretary who will support the board of directors by administering the affairs and managing the business of the board.
This role reports direct into the Chief Executive Officer and is based at our Flemington Precinct. We offer a hybrid way of working although we operate in the events/hospitality space and evening/weekend work will be required.
Areas of responsibility include - Finance and Procurement management. We are looking for someone who is a strong leader who can get the best out of their team whilst staying focused on the operational needs on cost management, financial reporting, planning and analysis and procurement management of all major contract negotiations.
Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy:
- Develop and execute the VRC’s financial strategy in alignment with the organisation’s vision, strategic goals, and operational requirements.
- Lead the financial forecasting, budgeting, and long-term planning processes, ensuring financial objectives support business growth and sustainability.
- Advise the CEO, Board, and Executive Leadership Team on key financial matters, opportunities, and risks.
- Oversee the development and implementation of financial policies, systems, and controls to ensure financial integrity and compliance.
- Provide strategic financial insights to support business decisions, capital investment, and operational efficiency.
Financial Reporting & Compliance:
- Ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and transparency of all financial reporting, including monthly and annual financial statements.
- Oversee the preparation and submission of regulatory filings, tax returns, and other financial documentation.
- Manage internal and external audits to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and accounting standards (e.g., AASB).
- Implement and monitor strong internal controls to safeguard financial assets and prevent financial mismanagement.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Lead the budgeting process across all departments, working closely with senior management to align financial resources with strategic priorities.
- Develop and maintain financial models and forecasts to predict revenue, expenses, and cash flow, advising the organisation on cost management and resource allocation.
- Track and report on key financial metrics, ensuring transparency and accountability in all cost-related activities, and adjust strategies as necessary to stay within budgetary constraints while achieving desired results.
- Monitor financial performance against budget and provide regular updates to the Executive Team and Board.
Cash Flow & Treasury Management:
- Oversee the Club’s cash flow, liquidity, and working capital management.
- Develop and implement treasury strategies to optimise cash flow, manage debt, and ensure financial flexibility.
- Monitor investment activities, evaluate asset growth opportunities, and mitigate financial risks to safeguard the Club's financial position.
Cost Management:
- Lead the strategy and execution of right-sizing the business to ensure optimal resource allocation, aligning with broader organisational objectives and financial targets.
- Foster a culture of fiscal efficiency, promoting accountability at all levels of the organisation and encouraging a mindset focused on value creation rather than excessive spending.
- Implement robust processes for evaluating the ROI of all expenditures, ensuring that each investment is directly linked to measurable outcomes and long-term organisational sustainability.
Qualifications
- A tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (e.g., Bachelor of Commerce, Business, or Economics).
- Professional certifications such as CPA (Certified Practicing Accountant), CA (Chartered Accountant), or equivalent are highly desirable.
- At least 10+ years of senior financial management experience, with a proven track record in a similar role, ideally in sports, entertainment, or large-scale events.
- Strong experience in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial planning.
- Experience working with Boards and executive teams to provide strategic financial guidance.
- Familiarity with financial regulations, taxation laws, and corporate governance in Australia.
- Prior experience managing a finance team and collaborating cross-functionally with departments like operations, marketing, and commercial teams.
- Company Secretary experience desirable.
