About the Role
The Director of Investments plays a pivotal role in identifying, evaluating, and guiding investment opportunities across early- and late-stage ventures, working closely with the Senior Director to lead deal processes, market research, financial analysis, and company assessments.
This position requires a nuanced understanding of investment opportunities, a collaborative approach to deal structuring, engaging, and consulting with internal and external technical and sector experts.
In acting as a deal lead, the Director will manage and coordinate a small group of assigned associates and analysts throughout the deal process including market research, financial analysis, and company assessments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the execution and coordination of market research, financial analysis, and thorough company assessments to develop and support transaction structuring and negotiation, applying good quality control over all financial, commercial and valuation analysis.
- Engage with internal and assigned external legal advisors, in developing investment memos and supporting the presentation of the investment opportunity to the relevant investment committee/s.
- Ensure portfolio construction principles are effectively applied when prioritising, screening, and developing investment opportunities.
- Work with internal teams to identify high-impact opportunities, effectively guiding and prioritising deal team efforts.
- Remain up to date on industry trends, emerging technologies, and the competitive landscape in which Breakthrough Victoria operate.
- Build and maintain relationships with investors, partners, and external service providers, fostering strategic partnerships to progress investment opportunities.
Key Requirements:
- Demonstrated ability and comfortable to lead on transaction due diligence, valuation, structuring and negotiating investment opportunities, having run (or been instrumental in) end-to-end investment processes including building/managing financial models, co-ordinating due diligence on and negotiating/reviewing legal agreements.
- Play a pivotal role in attracting opportunities that align with Breakthrough Victoria’s investment strategy.
- Experience in or exposure to startups, with a demonstrated ability to connect and collaborate with founders, and support early-stage entrepreneurs.
- Strong analytical skills with advanced financial modelling capabilities, along with resilience in managing ambiguity and complex scenarios.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to present data-backed proposals to diverse audiences.
- Deep experience in roles within the realms of deep tech sectors, venture capital, private equity, consulting, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities, guiding teams through complex situations with confidence and empathy.
- At least 5 years of relevant investment experience, which may be in one or multiple domains of investing including Angel investing, VC funds, Corporate Ventures, Family Offices, and/or Private Equity.
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in business, finance, engineering, science, or a related field is preferred.
